DIY Primitive Angel from Paper Towel Tube | craft | DIY Mini Primitive Angel for Grocery Trash to Treasure Day in the Craft Round the Clock group! These angels would make great kid crafts for Christmas... | By My Sweet Home Living | Hello, everybody. Welcome to My Sweet Home Living. My name is Tracy Campbell. Welcome on in. I have a very simple and easy DIY for you today and it's a great project that you can make it your own according to whatever your taste or style is. You can personalize it to fit you. There's tons of different ways you can take it. So, come on in. Join me for the next 30 minutes for a fun, mini-sized primitive angel and you won't believe what we're using to make it today. I'm going to show you that in just a minute but first, this is a 30-minute time slot segment in the Craft on the Clock group. Today is all about Grocery Trash to Treasure. So, taking items that you would typically throw away and turning them into some cute DIY crafts or home decor. If you like that, check out the Craft on the Clock group. All day up until 6 PM Central Time tonight. We have some fun Grocery Trash to Treasure projects for you. So, hop on in here and let me know you're here. Good morning, miss Mary. Good morning, miss Sherry. Good morning, Elizabeth and I will tell you, I just wanted to show you some of the things that you can create using items left over from things that you've probably purchased at the grocery, at the grocery you guys. So, I'm all about using what you have most of the time and I like to create home decor and props, styling props that from from trash, you know, turning it into things not necessarily trash as in like yucky stuff but typically that you would discard like cardboard and jars and containers and whatnot. Those kinds of things are what we're all about repurposing today, finding ways to reuse instead of throwing them away. Good morning, Misty. Good morning, miss Brittany and Cheryl. How are you guys? So, I just have a little collection of things. I believe the last time, I don't remember if I did this project on Grocery Trash to Treasure or it may have been cardboard day. Kinda similar similar in theme but this was created using a Velveeta cheese box. Can you believe that? That's right. We gave it a the crackle finish. We grunched it. Turned it into a cute little egg like a little nesting box sort of type idea that's made from a Velveeta cheese box you guys. You would never know. I mean, it looks like wood. That's crazy. So, that's a Grocery Trash to Treasure project. I'm just kind of giving you a little bit of inspiration. I do have video replays for all of these project that I'm showing you right now. How about a Starbucks drink bottle container? Turning that into some little decor and props for styling in your home. I use these over here in my little jelly cupboard. Love those. Add a little twine, a little bell. You can personalize it with some labels, whatnot. How about an old syrup bottle? I don't like throwing away jars and so I just stick some labels on it personalized. This even has tea bags applied to it to give it that frosty look and then some coffee instant coffee grounds for the grungy look how about an apple juice bottle this is a glass apple juice jar repurposed it given it a faux beeswax finish another amazing little home decor prop that I would have typically probably most people would have thrown the jar away good morning miss Till and Lisa Daisy oatmeal container this is an oatmeal container you guys look it even has the oatmeal raisin recipe still under the lid. This is a Quaker Oats container. Spray painted it. I gave it a little bit of grunging with some distressed ink. Put a label on there and this is a nice prop. Same with this. This is a lemonade drink mix container. I use this all throughout my kitchen, dining room styling. You all probably seen this little prop and it is popular over on Pinterest. My photo with this. It's a Pinterest favorite but it's just a lemonade drink mix container that you would typically throw away repurpose it you would never know that right never know and I usually keep that over here on my little hutch area let let's see two more I want to show you with the same Lemonade drink mix container you can turn it into an amazing little primitive colonial style faux tin lamp you will see me create this on a live there are videos replays for all of these if you go to my video library on Facebook over or over on my YouTube channel they're all there they're all there now one of my favorites I like to use pickle jars like the big size pickle jars even if I don't eat the pickles sometimes I've been known to buy a jar of jalapenos just for the jar get the cheap kind just to get the jar sometimes but this is a big one and this is my grubby jar technique okay right here I grab it up with some coffee grounds Mod Podge and get that real grubby finish it kind of makes it look like whoop this way looks like a faux croc like stoneware. Now, the other side is more for fall. It has a pumpkin primitive pumpkin style label on there. I kind of taken this apart so it's all kind of mixed match this morning but this side is the one I use for everyday. I'd have it displayed over here next to my jelly cabinet molasses cookies. It has a labeling grabbed up around that but how fun are these? These are all grocery trash things. Things that you can repurpose, right? So, think outside of the box and hopefully today inspires you if you're over in the Craft on the Clock group to get creative using some things that you have at your fingertips. You don't have to go out and buy new things. Just have a few staple items to craft with but as far as inspiration for the big pieces of it, think no further than your kitchen or your garbage can, okay? Good morning. Thank you, miss Gretchen. Alright, today, we are using paper towel rolls, okay? We've all used paper towels, right? We're turning this in, I was going to make a mini angel but actually, I think we might make a little bit full size. You could use this same idea with toilet paper rolls and I thought I had a toilet paper roll handy this morning and I don't but I did have two paper towel rolls. So, you can scale this project however you want and turn it into an ornament or whatever but I'm going to show you how to turn it into an angel and we're going to do it primitive I have not made this before. This is an idea that is Pinterest inspired but I've got a little twist. Gonna make it my own of course in the primitive style. So, come on in here. Thank you, miss Terry Lynn. How are you? Thank you so much. Hi, miss Linda. Um thank you miss Diane. Okay, you guys. So, what I'm going to do with this paper towel roll. I'm going to start by making some slits. Um I probably about three fourths of the way up the tube, okay? Now, I'm going to make, I don't know how many slits I still make. I'm just going to kind of eyeball it, okay? Now, however this turns out, you can adjust it. You can see how mine turns out and then in just yours when you make yours to fit your style or your size or whatever whatever you think, okay? You can really take this idea and run with it which is kind of what I did. Was inspired by an idea I saw on Pinterest and I thought aha. I know exact how I can make that my own. Hi, miss Yvette. Hey, miss Shaina. How are you? I am surprised. You probably already been out in the garden this morning, haven't you? I have been seeing all of your garden harvest. Oh my gracious. Uh we should be neighbors. Shaina, can can you move up here or I can move down there to you? I would love to be your neighbor. Oh goodness girl, you inspire me. Alright. So, I'm just making, I'm just cutting these slits to make em somewhat even. We're not measuring anything around here. You know, we keep it fairly simple around here. Nothing fancy. Nothing too complicated. We're just doing simple and this is going to be a quick project that you can probably whip out in about ten, 15 minutes if you just sit down and go straight to it but we're chatting a little bit this morning and that's going to that's going to be okay because sometimes crafting is therapy and so take your time. Don't be in a rush, right? Good morning, miss Christy from The Dashing Willow. How are you sweet friend? So that's what I have so far now first of all let me back up if your tube is not white you will want to paint it white probably I guess you could make it the cardboard look if you really want to grunge it and give it like a primitive even more of a primitive look you could probably still go for that but in my head I'm thinking of like a creamyish color angel okay that's what I have so far now you're going to take it and you're going to flare this out just a little bit okay because this is going to serve as the bottom of the angel, okay? Alright, I am one of these slits I'm going to take all the way up to the top, okay? I did forget to mention that. Alright, so I did on one side, I did cut it all the way up to the top. Now, what we're going to do is instead of this paper towel bin that this the regular diameter, we're going to shrink it a little bit, okay? Now, it depends on how much how small you want to shrink it because you're going to need a little head for your angel of course. You could use a wood bead. You could use a styrofoam ball. You could use anything you you could use a tennis ball, a wiffle ball, cover it, whatever. I have just a standard Styrofoam ball, okay? And I have covered it with some fabric strips. Make it look like a primitive style rag ball, okay? Good morning, miss Lori. Hey, miss Patty Judy. Thank you miss Terry Lynn for sprinkling this out. I appreciate you so much, friend. Hey, miss Cathy Campbell. I love that name. My name is Tracy Campbell. So excited y'all are here today. Alright. So, I'm going to eyeball it. Before I glue that, I'm going to eyeball it and I want to see. Is that proportionate? In fact, no. I think my paper towel tube is a little tall. So, what I would probably need to do, let's cut the tubing down just a little bit. It's a little bit long, a little bit tall. So, let's cut it down. This is not going to be straight or even. Let's just put that disclaimer out there right now but you could you could get it straight. You want to take the time to do so. Alright. This is going to kind of give her a little bit of a double skirt effect to her to the bottom. There we go. I think that's I think that's good. Alright, so now let's glue that down. Let me get a good look. We're just going to glue it down with some hot glue up here at the top. Let's get a new glue stick. It's not wanting to go down. And once we get this wrapped around, we're going to embellish her and give her all the personality, the prim personality that we want her to have. So, that's where the fun part comes in to where you can really personalize it to your own style. This is going to be the fun part. Okay. Make sure that gets a good hold and this little edge wants to pucker out. So, I'm going to put a little extra glue right there at that edge. Ooh that's hot. I do want it pressed down good though now obviously where your seam comes to meet that will probably the back of your angels Alright, let's get this glue off. Okay. Now, of course, I'm probably going to add a little bit of coffee grunge to her body here later and this cardboard will really soak up that grunge. If you're not familiar with what I'm talking about. Um I do have a coffee grunge mixture that I use to give a little bit of a stain appearance to the projects that I use. All I'm doing right now is I think I'm going to take these little these little strips here and I'm going to kind of give em a little bit of a curl. Totally optional and I may decide that I'm not that I don't like it. I don't know. Okay. I'm starting to think of another idea right now as I'm doing this but how cute would it be to put a spindle, a real skinny spindle under that and make her a little stand with a spindle, a vintage spindle. That would be so cute. Um let's go ahead and let's let's scrunch this up a little bit. Did I bring, oh please tell me. Okay. I thought, did I bring my brushes to the table? You should have seen me before going live. I was running around here like a chicken with my head cut off. Trying to get things. Hey, miss Sandy. Hey, Amy and Allison. How are you ladies? Good to see you. Like I haven't been on here in a while because I really haven't. I've been busy this week. Busy, busy, busy. This coffee grunch mix, the recipe is pinned at the top of my Facebook page. Um it is a cup of hot water, a half a cup of instant coffee, two tablespoons of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of vanilla. Now, when you put it on, it's going to look darker than when it dries, it will lighten. You can apply as many coats as you want to get the color that you want, okay? Now, it also has an amazing smell which is what I love. And this I think is going to kind of give it a little bit of a is there such a thing as shabby primitive. I don't know. Um we might create it today. Alright, I'm just giving it a good coat and it's still going to allow that white to shine through but it's going to give it that T stained look, okay? Now, when it dries, honestly, for this, to keep the cardboard stiff, I might go over it with a a coat of Mod Podge to kind of stiffen it up. Yup, because that cardboard wants to get a little flimsy. So, it will be flimsy while it's wet but when it dries, I think it'll stiffen back up and if not, I'll put that Mod Podge on there and let it dry and that will help stiffen it up, I bet. Alright. Let's give it a little quick little dry with the heat tool here. Alright. Right now doesn't look like anything but a floppy octopus. Good morning, miss Dana. How are you? Good morning, miss Liz from Crafty Queens. How are you? She's one of our new creative team members over in the Craft on the Clock group. We're so excited to have her and many other ladies joining us. It's just an amazing place to be, you guys. If you're not familiar with the Craft on the Clock group, I would love for you to check it out. Okay. Here's going to be her head. Still trying to decide is that too tall. I still think it's too tall. Let's do this. Like I said, this is going to be the guinea pig and then you can this is the little beta tester angel here and you can adjust it after you see how mine turns out and mine maybe a flop but you could adjust it to your liking. Alright, I'm going to glue that right on top right there. So, I'm going to put hot glue around the top of that paper towel roll I'm going to put a little bit on the rag ball and we are going to hope that sticks together. Get that glue string out of there. Alright, let's hold that down for a second. Um hey, miss Pammy. Thank you. Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoy Craft on the Clock. Working right now with the Napkins You and oh, awesome. Hey, miss Lisa from Crafting and Cruising. Miss Penny from Remake It Pretty. We got all kinds of Craft from the Clock ladies in the house. Alright, I want to make sure that that's dry again and this is just fabric strips wrapped around a styrofoam like a foam ball. I think I grabbed those foam balls at the Dollar General. I believe it's where I got it. Okay. Now, this needs to dry. So, while this is drying, we're going to work on the wings. I think. My paper towel roll is a little flimsy. I will tell you that. I will tell you that. Alright, so let's take this paper towel roll and let's cut it down and open it up. Okay, because this will be where we use for her wings. Whoo hoo and I'm just I'm just going to free hand the wings you guys. Just going to free hand it. Right now, I'm taking this. These paper towels are nice because they already have, they already have a white tube. So, I don't have to do any painting or I think it would really be pretty. If you did have a cardboard, you could dry brush it with some white and get that that kind of a look. I will say the back of this has some like printed stuff on it. So, I probably would have to paint over that or put fabric on it. Fabric fabric would really be cute. If you coated that paper towel tube in fabric first, that would be really cute. Really cute. You could coat it with some burlap. You could coat it or put a layer of lace. Something soft and not too busy. I will say that. I I would keep it simple in pattern wise, okay? Now, I'm going to take my angel. I'm going to lay I'm going to lay it kind of on top of this cardboard and that'll give me an idea of how big I want her wings to be. Alright, let's free hand it. I'm a little nervous to free hand these wings but we're going to give it a whirl. Good morning, miss Mary. Yes, it's going to be an angel, miss Joey. How are you from Created in Awe? Alright. We're going to freehand her wings and I'm not going to make them super complicated. I kind of want em straight at the top and then kind of scalloped down a little bit Okay. Now, if this were something I really wanted to turn out, I would create like a little template. So, once you get it the way you like it, cut it out and make a template so that if you make multiples of this, you'll have it. Okay. So, all I've done, let me show you. Do you see what I've done? I've kind of scalloped that out. So, what I'm going to do, in order to make my wings match, I'm going to fold it in half and that way when I trim it, both sides will be symmetrical. That's about as fancy as we're getting today. We're using a fancy what I would say for my teacher days vocabulary word today. Symmetrical and how about that for fancy today? Okay, we're going to cut out these scallops and hopefully this will give us the wing look. You know what would really be cute for these wings is if you use the corrugated cardboard. Oh yes. See I'm having all kinds of ideas come to me as I'm making this. So I told you she was just the beta. She's the beta angel. She's our tester. But in my mind I would think there are no two angels the same. Kinda like snowflakes. So hey. I think we can take that same thought and apply it to our angels. Alright, you guys. Now, while I have this here, I am going to level out this top. I'm going to even it out so it doesn't look quite so jagged. I want the top of that to be straight across. Okay, so that's what we have. We're going to open it up and hopefully, this will be her wings. Let's see what it looks like. I like it. I like it. Alright, before I put that on there, I'm going to put a little bit of the grunge, the coffee grunge on there just or Emma, should I leave it just white? Decisions. Decisions. I think I'm going to go ahead and put some on there. And if I don't like it, the next one will make it different. This is a cute project that would be super fun for the kids especially at holidays this would be a cute project to use in a classroom Sunday school group that would be an amazing project for for some kids in a Sunday school class this would be something they could put together and they could all bring their own paper towel roll how easy and it's not going to cost much at all just pennies and then they would have a cute keepsake ornament Alright, I'm going to dry this up but good morning, Krista from Europe. So excited you're here. Um Mandy, what grades did I teach? I have taught preschool. Gosh, I gotta think about it for a minute. Um fourth grade. First let's say kindergarten first, third, and fourth and preschool. All elementary pretty much except for second. I've never taught second or fifth grade but all the other grades for elementary and preschool. Good morning, miss Mary. How are you? Hey, miss Juanita and Jane. This is cute. Now, I would probably give a little bit more distressing around the edges of her wings but we only have so much time this morning. This is a quick craft and every 30 minutes today, we have Grocery Trash to Treasure Projects happening over in the Craft on the Clock group. So, if you don't want to spend a lot to make something super cute, today is the day. Head over to Craft on the Clock and get inspired using Grocery Trash turning them into some cute projects. Alright, I put glue right in the center of her wings and I'm going to put that right on the back Wanna make sure we get those wings straight. Get the glue strings out. Okay. Now, I will say around her neck, I'm probably going to add a little strand of lace or fabric and then right in the center, oh she needs a little she needs a halo. Let's see. This little lace right here would be cute. Let's try this out. Now, of course, it needs to be grunge in order to match her a little bit but for time sake, I have a little strand of like a lace ribbon. I don't know where this came from. Probably Hobby Lobby if I had to guess or Walmart, okay? Just a little strand. You could use fat fabric strip. You could even double it up. I had a little fabric strip handy. Where did I put it? You could double it. Here it is. This is this would be cute. I have a little piece of coordinating red fabric. You could kind of ruffle it up, gather it around the top, I like that. I probably should have done this before I glued her wings on. Probably. Hindsight's twenty twenty, right? Okay. I'm just going to tie this around here at the top for right now. This red strip, okay? And then I'll probably have to come in with the glue and glue that lace in but let's see what this looks like. Whoop. We only have just a couple minutes left and then my friend Jennifer with Home Sweet Create is coming up next and we have projects all day today all the way up until 6 PM and the replay will be pinned in the featured section of the group overnight so that you can go back and check those replays out. This is kind of cute. I kind of oh this is cute. I kind of like that better anyway. Now, my fabric might be a little thick. I might need to thin it down a little bit but I think that is super cute. Alright, let's see. I think miss Jennifer's, she might not be able to come on. I think I just had a message pop through that saying that she might not be able to come on but we'll see. If not, we will find somebody. Alright, I have a little button that I've created out of Model Magic. I love creating things out of that model magic and I've created a bunch of buttons last weekend. After my project that I was making a little snowman, I made some little buttons out of that model magic and they turned out So cute. She needs a little halo. Um in fact, if if miss Jennifer's not able to come on, I'll just I'll stay on and finish this with you guys. Alright, little halo. I'm just going to use a strand of twine. And I'm going to double it. Okay. I don't know if anybody that's watching is in our group chat for today. If so, y'all chime in and let me know. If miss Jennifer's not available, I can finish and take a little bit more time. Um I don't know if we have anybody here that's watching that can check. Jennifer's asking to switch with someone if they can come on. Okay. Okay. Perfect. Um Okay. We may not be able to work it out. If there's somebody able to come on, you all chime in in the comments. Chip miss Joey, that would be awesome. If there's somebody that says that they can come on right now, I will go ahead and hop off. Otherwise, I'll just keep on going. Uh and I think miss Joey, are you up after Jennifer? I can't, I don't have the schedule of memorize this morning. If so, you can let me know when you're ready and we'll skip right on to you. Whoo. Okay, perfect Mary. Okay. I'll keep on tracking here and then let me know who's after Jennifer on our schedule. Okay, perfect. Alright, that's alright. We'll keep rolling. Sometimes things happen you guys and we just roll with it and keep on tracking and we're flexible around here. Alright, I just doubled up that little jute and that's going to be her little halo. I think that's going to be cute. I will say this paper towel roll is really flimsy. So, if you're going to do the paper towel method, I would probably put a layer of fabric on it to kind of help hold its shape a little better. So, The next one that I make, I will probably do that. The Dashing Willow. Okay. So, miss Kristy from The Dashing Willow. We'll see. If she wants to start a little bit earlier, okay, miss. Okay, miss Christy says she can go on. Alright, miss Christy. Awesome. I'm going to finish this up and then we'll let her start a little bit early. Alright. Okay one more thing we're going to finish this I have the little clay hearts okay I made it out of the model magic the same as I did the little buttons see that little button on there is that not so cute I made different shapes let me show you what I did I've just laid out a sheet of wax paper and I had a little package of model magic Crayola's Model Magic and that was just fell off we've just got that on there and I made those little buttons and little hearts and let them dry and I painted them so I'm going to I'm going to take that small little heart and glue that right in the center and then I'm going to hang a little twine hanger from the from the back of her head and that's my little Christmas ornament how cute is that now I'm going to work a little bit on her skirt I'm going to add some little tassels of fabric up in there that would look really cute okay you guys miss Christy from The Dashing Willow is up right now okay you guys thank you so much for joining me enjoy the rest of Grocery Trash to Treasure Day and I will see you again very soon bye guys.
