SialCanada on Instagram: "👉@claystationbangalore  ・・・ Oil Spot Effect!   · Oil spot effect is obtained by the Double-layering of Iron rich glazes  · So, the Iron rich glaze should be the base coat and the other contrast glazes would be the second coat  · This effect is happening because of the bubble formation due to the release of gases during the breakdown of iron oxide followed by crystallization of Iron during cooling. · In simple way, the skin of the bubbles oxidizes and then lays down on the surface again creating these oil spot effects   Our Experiments:  · First glaze is the Base glaze, 3 Secs dipping time  · Second glaze is dipped after fully dried of the first coat and then quickly dipped  · Fired at Cone 6 temp, Oxidation firing  1. Jackie Wright Ceramics on Instagram: "How I make black porcelain. A regular question that I get.

Key things to note:

- I use bone dry clay trimmings/reject pots 
- I weigh the dry clay and add 5% black stain 
- I eyeball it with the water (sorry!)
- I leave to slake for a few days before mixing.

I fire lower than I would with white porcelain as some of the oxides in the stain act as a flux to reduce the temperature at which the clay matures. For white I fire cone 9-10 and cone 7 for the black.
