The Golden orb-weaver spider (Nephila clavipes) is the only species of golden orb-web spider indigenous to continental North & South America. They're harmless and only bite when assaulted. Their bite is milder than a bee sting. The name of the golden silk orb-weavers refers to the color of the spider silk, not the color of the spider itself. Orb Weavers are known to occasionally eat prey as big as small birds. IG 📸 @jennysd0m

As members of the orb-weaver family of spiders, these amazing creatures build the typical circular web of their cousins across pathways so you can walk into them in the dark. The purpose of the disproportionately long body horns however remains a mystery. This is one of the larger individuals I have come across; each horn is about 45mm in length. Pu'er, Yunnan, China

Known as the Golden Orb Weaver, Giant Wood spider, the Golden Silk spider is also known as the Banana Spider- a name it shares with a more venomous cousin that hides in crates of bananas. This is the second largest spider in North America, with North Carolina at the edge of its range. More info at: http://www.ehow.com/about_4565425_the-banana-spider.html
