Here is a picture of a football player wearing eye black. Eye black is a grease applied under the eyes to reduce glare from the sun blinding the player and is often used by baseball, football, and lacrosse players to prevent the sun from becoming to much of a hindrance and distraction. Eye black first appeared in the 1930's in professional baseball, and was first worn in the NFL by Andy Farkas, a fullback for the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions. ~Sierra
