The Evolution of Calendars

Our current Gregorian calender is 11 days ahead of the previous Julian calendar which was introduced in 45 BCE, but gradually was out of sync with the vernal equinox & winter solstice. To correct this & to align with the seasons, 11 days were dropped in 1582 when the Gregorian calendar was adopted by Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain & France. England, Canada & US did not follow until 1752. The changeover led to riots in England as people thought that their lives had been shortened by 11 days !
