The Seuss Quilt - a Flimsy

And then there was a quilt top all sewn together.

It still needs a final pressing 

but it is 100% off the design wall.

Nineteen 4-inch tumblers wide x eighteen rows long.

That's 342 tumblers die cut from 

approximately fifteen different Seuss prints.

Once quilted with the side edges trimmed 

The Seuss Quilt should measure in the 56" x 72" range.

My goal is to get this quilted before year end.

Time will tell . . .

Woolgathering - the Flimsy

This is Woolgathering.

(Noun - indulgence in aimless thought

or dreamy imagining)

I discovered a project box of 3.5" low volume strip sets

cut eons ago for a long-forgetten project,

but instead of setting them aside for later

I took a detour and turned them into this quilt top.

As with many low volume quilts, Woolgathering will be 

at its best when being used in the recliner.

I used the Two by Four tutorial by Film in the Fridge

re-sizing her dimensions for my wider strips.

I only had to choose/cut five additional pairs 

of fabrics beyond what was in the box.

Here's another "crumpled" photo of the flimsy.

I'll use this Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements 

"Memoranda" yardage (left) for the backing and a 

long-long-stashed cobblestone print for binding.

FMQ for Woolgathering will happen

sooner instead of later since we use

all of our low volume quilts in January

after the holiday items are packed away.

Merry and Bright - the Flimsy

Merry and Bright is now a quilt top.

I used the 3-hour Baby Gingham Quilt design -

a free download from the Fat Quarter Shop,

enlarging it to suit my needs.

The top is currently 65" x 65"

(this will be December's kitchen table quilt)

That's the backing on the left 

along with a strip of the binding fabric.

I feel MUCH better having the twelfth

kitchen table quilt at this stage.

FMQ will happen in plenty of time

for this to go on the table Dec. first.

Pandemonium - the Flimsy

And then there was a flimsy on my design wall.

54" wide x 66" long 

Pat left a comment the other day 

wondering why I persisted with this project . . . 

Hopefully you can see why I didn't want to give up.

Wonderfully scrappy . . .

Full of interesting bits to look at . . . 

And ultimately satisfying - 

now that the top is complete.

(that's the planned binding along the right edge)

Joan wondered if Pandemonium didn't need a new name.

I did consider changing it given how the top evolved,

but I'm not going to since the scrappy back 

will not be nearly as calm as the quilt's front.

Getting this AHIQ quilt top completed

was one of my primary goals for September.

I'm happy to cross it off the list.

Farmland - September’s Kitchen Table Quilt

Farmland is finished!

64" x 64" 

September's kitchen table quilt was quilted 

with Glide thread in Military Gold (top)

and a wide variety of neutral Glide threads

in bobbins leftover from previous FMQ projects.

I used multiple FMQ motifs including organic lines,

both straight and wavy, my liberated all-over fans, and

a lot of letting the fabrics inspire the quilted lines.

(a single all-over design just did not

suit the inspiration concept of patchwork 

farm fields as seen from the air . . . )

The quilted texture is wonderful on the front -

but hardly shows at all on the back.

I am very happy with the way Farmland came together.

After a trip through the washer/dryer 

to enhance the quilted texture,

Farmland will take up residence 

on our kitchen table later today.

Hoppipolla - the Flimsy

I finished up this flimsy late last week -

Hoppipolla is part of my Etcetera series.

(an Icelandic verb meaning "jumping into puddles" 

but my own version is from Dr. Seuss:

"If you never did you should.  

These things are fun and fun is good")

Construction began as part of RSC 2021

(January-pink, February-yellow, March-green,

April-blues, and May-red)

but in June I took off on my own

and this quilt top is the result.

I absolutely love the level of scrappiness.

The inspiration trail for Hoppipolla is long and winding:

February 2017 - Amanda Jean Nyberg's Crazy Rails

August 2020 - Diann B's Rainbow Rails

January 2021 - Cathy L's Rail Fence

(my own twist is that the two sides of each block 

are not exactly the same)

Doing the math for Hoppipolla:

960 1.5" x 3.5" strips

became

320 3" blocks

which became 160 pairs of 3" blocks

which became eighty 6" x 6" four-patches 

which became twenty

 12" blocks with four four-patches each

which were laid out

four across by five down (48" x 60")

plus 1" inner and a 4" outer borders

for a randomly scrappy top 

that currently measures 57" x 70"

FMQ will happen early in 2022.

I can't wait to quilt/finish/use this one.

This is the backing fabric.

Sweater Weather - the Flimsy

November's Kitchen Table Quilt has reach flimsy status.

(back story and inspiration pattern link in this post)

The top currently measures 67" x 67" 

not including the not-yet-squared-corner-extras.

Once FMQ is completed sometime in October,

 I'll square the quilt to 64" x 64"

September's Kitchen Table Quilt is up for FMQ this week.

October's Kitchen Table Quilt is ready to FMQ in September.

And now November's KTQ is ready for its turn in October.

December's KTQ will feather a whole cloth top

and a giant four-patch backing - 

I hope to work on both during September/October

so it will be ready to FMQ in November.

Blithe - the Flimsy

Blithe is now a finished quilt top.

In less than a week . . . and all from the stash.

(I doubt this will be the last 18-patch I'll make)

I wasn't going to add a border but ultimately I did.

The top didn't look finished 

AND the border secured all those seam ends.

I've had this Timeless Treasures blue since 2015'ish -

high time that it gets put to use.

(binding has been made from the same fabric)

I had forgotten all about this amazing elephant print

until I went looking for border options.

It is beyond perfect as backing for Blithe.

I'll add the blue on white print to either side

of the WOF elephant print.

The top finished at 55" wide x 68" long.

FMQ will likely not happen until 2022.

Ludic - the Flimsy

The top for Ludic is sewn together.

(adjective - playful in an aimless way)

Thanks to Cathy L for the layout idea.

The colors are a bit less "yellow" in real life.

Detail shot for the many scrappy fabrics.

Top measures 48" wide (sixteen 3" HSTs) 

by 64" long (twenty-one 3" HSTs).

I will use this for the backing

but FMQ will likely not happen early 2022.

Farmland - the Flimsy

This was the assortment of fabrics I pulled last January

for September's kitchen table quilt.

(for those who might not know about my 12-quilt project,

click HERE for the "introductory" post)

After the pieces were pressed, 

I grouped them on the design wall

by approximate size so I could

better visualize what I had to work with.

It was at this point that I decided to make 

a slab quilt for September.

By the end of February

there were nine slabs

laid out on the design wall.

After each slab was assembled

it was put back in the project box.

Now the nine slabs have been squared to 20" 

and sewn together with a 3" all-around border.

(I'll square those corners after quilting)

The fabric hanging on the left will be

used to back Farmland.

(Cotton and Steel yardage from 2018)

I have a rough idea of how I want to quilt Farmland.

Time will tell if that plan sticks around.

Gerful - the Flimsy

A look at my design wall last week - 

this is another of my HST quilts, namely

Gerful (noun) - "wild and wayward"

I've been leader-endering the 

individual HSTs for a long time now.

It felt good to turn them into blocks.

Twenty scrappy 12" (fin.) blocks 

laid out on the design wall. 

And then they turned into a flimsy (quilt top)!

48" x 60"

I'll use these fabrics to piece a scrappy back.

The sassy teapot fabric is the very last 

of long-saved yardage used as the back for my

2007 quilt AND SOMETIMES Y -- 

as in this piece is the 52" length that was 

once to cover my oversized ironing table top.
