Windmill Baby Quilt Finished!

I used several grey fabrics from the collection Sketch from Timeless Treasures.

For the backing : Sketch Ivory from Timeless Treasures.

For the binding : Cloud 9, from Elizabeth Olwen,  Grey Abbey Organic Gentile Vines Dandelion.

For the batting I used a thin organic cotton one.

This quilt will be used as a light blanket for spring and autumn. For next winter I plan to make a warmer one, and for this purpose, I would welcome any advice on a warm and fluffy batting quality from you.

Many people were suspicious on using grey color for a baby quilt, but in fact I believe that, as babies' rooms are always overcrowded with lively colored toys, adding again colors in a quilt would be somewhat tiring for the eyes. However I allowed myself to make it less dull by adding a glittering yellow border.

Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy at Kathy's Quilts.

After a long time without hand quilting, I decided to hand quilt the Windmill baby quilt for my grandson. The last time I did so was for the Four Patch Quilt few years ago.

Today I will try quilting with large stitches, which is not so easy for me because when I started quilting I learnt that the most tiny stitches the most beautiful and valuable! Large stitches give a different style, maybe more actual, but the difficulty is to make even stitches.

Windmill HST Baby Quilt Tutorial

Measurements :

Finished block : 7.25"

Finished top : 29" x 36.25"

To make this quilt you will need 5 shades of grey fabrics

from light grey to dark grey. 9" of each one.

Fold your 9" fabric in 2 from seam to seam.

Cut it in 2 lengthwise.

You obtain 2 strips of 4.50"width.

Put 4 strips over each other and cut squares of 4.50".

Cut them in diagonal.

You obtain those triangles.

Put two different shades triangles right side against right side,

and sew them on the diagonal side.

Trim the corners this way.

You obtain this unit.

Open press it.

Lay your 4 units this way.

Sew 2 units together.

Press on the dark side (always).

You obtain those 2 new units.

Sew them together and open press.

You block is ready.

To make your quilt top, arrange your blocks the way it pleases you and then assemble  

them this way :

Sew four blocks together for your first row.

Go on this way with the next 4 rows.

Last step : sew the 5 rows together.

My twenty Windmill blocks are ready to be assembled for another baby quilt. Since yesterday I tried various combinations on the design board. When my daughter came this morning she disarranged everything 

until she told me that this makes her dizzy and disappeared! So I remained alone in front of those three options and I think I will choose the third one.
