I Still Have The Love And The Ability. Or - That Was An Eye Opener

Image
Well, the last few days have been an eye-opener... It's been a loooooong time since I undertook a large project for myself in any scale, and as you know, if you follow my gaming life, for the last 6 years I've sent everything to a painter, since Lockdown meant I amassed a stash of money through the lack of shows. 2026, has resulted in attending just one show, with absolutely zero desire to go to any others for the time being, the idea of those moon-faced, wholesome idealists we seem to be plagued with these days along with over priced tickets - no the organisers do NOT bring people in, it's the xhibitors who don't get any financial recompense, and the traderts who pay for the pleasure of having sometimes sweaty and unhygienic souls pawing their wares before reaching into the coin purse to nbuy one figure, expecting the trader to act as if they are being showered (see the irony?) with largesse comparable to a trip to Harrods by a Saudi prince. Yesterday, I received an u...

Making Headway With The Sci-Fi & Sparking Memories

Image
I love, 15mm Sci-Fi. To be honest, I'd really forgotten just how deeply this wonderful 'period' is etched into the DNA of my gaming experience. Rediscovering it, with the emphasis being on not recreating the exact models, but certainly going full-on with the aesthetic, is proving to be a real emotional roller coaster.  I have always been inspired by the Striker rules, box art, and 'grav' and 'hover' APC's, so it was only natural that this was the direction I took at the outset. As I mentioned previously in another post, I have opted for a mix of models from GZG, Alternative Armies (who currently have a 20% off everything sale in play - go and buy something immediately) and Brigade Models. Jon at GZG and Gavin at AA are a real pleasure to deal with, and they look after and dare I say, spoil their customers. I ordered over £400 of models from GZG at the start of the week, and, even with a late night addition on Wednesday, to my order, Jon got it all to me...

Get To The Hover! Or, How Reminiscence Of Times Past Generated Positive Action In The Present...

Image
A very good day to you, and thanks for stopping by. You may recall, when we chatted recently, that I have fond memories of playing Laserburn in the early 80s, albeit at a scale which, even then, was in the realm of 'go big or go home' and beyond the scope of the standard Laserburn rules. We would regularly construct a spaceport with 'buildings' made from the foam inserts of Citadel figure boxes, using haberdashers pins to hold them together, once we'd unpacked all the Traveller models from them. Terrain was limited, and of course there were no starships on the table, we had to use silhouett, very simple silhouettes it has to be said, to represent where starships were located. We assumed that the defenders were freedom fighters, terrorists or alien invaders who would usually take control of the buildings around the spaceport and dig in, having to be rooted out by 'The Military', who would advance across the Synth-Mac under murderous fire and try to do some d...

Memory Lane - Part 14. A Green Horizon

Image
Well, I promised at the end of Part 12 that I'd tell you more about the 'Green Horizon' scenario for the Traveller RPG, which appeared in White Dwarf 35 and how it changed things up for me. Ass I've already related, the late Steve Roberts (blessed may his name be, and always remembered for the great man he was) was running a 'feeder' operation for SWS at Limpsfield School, which was a 'community school' modelled loosely on some of the Radical Left teaching methods which proliferated in the 70s. It's an interesting subject in it's own right and was the only school I know of in the area which turned out well-rounded kids from all backgrounds. Being 10 years old and let loose in a purpose built craft workshop with enamelling kilns, was amazing as was the sense of folk history and appreciation of the environment we were instilled with by passionate, committed, truly politically radical staff, hand picked for the job.  The school sat as a very sol...
