Remember when Nikolaj Coster Waldau spoiled Jaime’s real ending and Dumb & Dumber had to change it to surprise the viewers?
Yeah, good times.
“Men will always underestimate you, and their pride will make them want to vanquish you quickly, let it be said that a woman tried them sorely. Let them spend their strength in furious attacks, whilst you conserve your own. Wait and watch, girl, wait and watch.”
Goodwin, master-at-arms at Evenfall Hall, and baby Brienne of Tarth
Jaime calling Brienne “my lady of Tarth” in front of others gets me every time. Not “the lady of Tarth”, not “Lady Brienne”, but “my lady of Tarth”. Later he doesn’t deny Qyburn’s half joking claim of “your maid of Tarth” either. The possessiveness, hmm. No wonder he’s shocked Brienne hasn’t briefed him on her betrothals when Connington told him about it.
I think I've had something of an epiphany about the gender-weird honor-bound Thing in ASOS (this is not necessarily a new take, but it is new to me.) There are, of course, a lot of daily habits and interactions between Brienne and Jaime we don't see. But what just walloped me is how much of Jaime's inner monologue Brienne isn't getting, and how much this matters. (This does not preserve her from hearing him talk a good deal more than she would wish. This woman is so long-suffering.) He does insult her, yes. But she's heard similar insults all her life. I suspect -- and I might be projecting here -- that to some extent, this rolls off her back. If one's heard the same sneer since one was about seven, by the time one's grown up, I think, one's found some measure of peace with whatever aspect of one's identity is the target.
But more importantly: Brienne doesn't get the resentful inner monologue in which he is trying (badly) to process both his growing attraction to her and the fact that he is neither the leader of this expedition nor the strongest person in it nor even the most flamboyant (she may be dour, but she also dives off a cliff.) What she knows is that he will laugh because the sun is shining, and sing because they are beside a pool. Because GRRM repeats himself, it's more than once that we are told that Jaime suppresses "a dozen cruel japes" before speaking. But Brienne doesn't get the japes. She gets the lone rejoinder. Brienne doesn't get his "what is the stupid woman doing?" thought process. All she knows is that her prisoner has suddenly started taunting their pursuer and challenging him to single combat (!!) to distract from her desperate stratagem, and it's working. She doesn't get the soldier's reflexive "I technically could try to stave her head in"; all she knows is that her prisoner, who is so weakened/malnourished due to prolonged imprisonment that he is still struggling with activities like *checks notes* running and getting his own limbs over the side of a coracle, is bracing an oar against the current so that she can regain safety. What she knows is that even when injured and desperately ill, he will defend her any way he can. And that eventually, he decides that waiting for her father to ransom her from among their enemies is not enough; he will reclaim her himself, if he dies in the attempt. Because -- he says -- he dreamed about her.
Without the Inner Monologue of Plausible Deniability, this is... this is sure something.
( a collection of too close for 'just friends' prompts. adjust phrasing as necessary.) feel free to make edits to better suit your muse.
- They’ve always hugged, but lately those hugs linger just a beat too long.
- Sharing a bed during a trip—neither of them sleeps much because they’re too aware of the other’s presence.
- Accidentally slipping into couple habits (buying each other food, remembering their exact coffee order, fixing their collar, etc.).
- Friends teasing them for acting like a couple… and both of them freezing because it hits a little too close.
- One notices the other’s dating profile and feels irrationally territorial.
- The line between “friendly banter” and “flirting” has gotten blurry.
- A partner/bystander points it out bluntly: “You know they’re in love with you, right?”
- A fight about boundaries—because one of them wants more, but is terrified of losing the friendship.

- “That’s not a friendly kind of jealousy.”
- “If we’re just friends, then why do I feel like you’re mine?”
Kind of wild to me that we don’t know what house Brienne’s mom was from nor even her given name, but Beauty and the Beast is an absent mom story after all*
*Well, kind of. In the first published version (Eng translation) it turns out that Beauty was switched at birth and has two living biological parents, one of whom is the Beast’s mother’s brother…GoT Jaime voice Are you sure we’re not related?
^Probably just an Easter egg for those in the know lmaoo
My guess would have been that she was from another stormlander house, but Brienne’s first betrothed was a Caron (marcher), and there’s some variety in House Tarth’s historical matches…
And then there’s the infamous Targaryen info (but I doubt that would have been Brienne’s mom, and it’s also possible a Tarth married into House Targ and not the other way around). What do we think…
I have always thought that GRRM has deliberately said/wrote little about House Tarth, and Brienne’s lineage in particular, because there’s a BIG reveal there. She, and her relationship with Jaime, I think, will be the key driver of the climax and finale of ASOIAF….if he ever finishes it!
brienne does not change jaime. she does not try to fix him. brienne does not do anything but exist, which is meaningful enough obviously because of what she embodies. and then jaime decides to change himself separated from her. jaime is not even romantically pursuing her as he changes himself
brienne is someone who cares and retains her values and humanity and continuously rejects and contradicts jaime’s cynical worldview that he uses to justify himself. her very existence is a condemnation of jaime on every level. she is someone who seems undeterred by the contradictions and refuses to become corrupted by them. it doesnt matter that most of her society despises her for what she is and continuously blocks her path instead of rewarding it. she is “no chance and no choice.” that is why she is a catalyst for jaime, but the responsibility and burden of change is on jaime. he is doing that work, not her. and he is doing it for himself, not her.
the thing about jaime is that at the core he wants to be able to actually like himself. he is hungry and aching for love from others, but especially (above all) the self. that is the driving force here. i genuinely cannot comprehend how ppl do not grasp that he hates himself
Anyways girls don't want boys, girls want an ending for Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" saga that does not signal that redemption is unachievable, abuse victims can never escape their abusers and you are unworthy of love if you dare to differ from society's beauty standards :).
It's me, I am girls and fucking scared of the next books.
Testify! Scream it loud! Loud enough so GRRM can hear!
Give it voice, so they give us credence.
Emotional investment is what we gave.
Justice for Jaime and Brienne is what we are owed.
And it must be set to rights - for the message it sent to the masses - that redemption is beyond reach and that unconventional women are beyond love.
I vowed to fight for Braime - I intend to keep that promise.
Who’s with me?
I am girls! I’m with you!! We ride at dawn, for Braime!!
