Do you love the idea of quilt-as-you-go but don't want to add strips between each block. Then this direct joining technique is for you! There are 3 key points to remember to make this easy to achieve 1. Several blocks can be joined into a strip of manageable size before quilting 2. Cut the backing & wadding at least 1" larger than the piece you are quilting i.e. 9 1/2" square block requires minimum of 10 1/2" squares of backing & wadding 3. It’s much faster for me and I can crank out a bunch of shapes at once!!  I am using the template set from Daisy and Grace for my quilt. I’ve use the hexie the most but also have the jewel, diamond and half hexie in this quilt.   This method is quick, but takes a little practice. My iron is on standby just in case I need to use it!!   Layer your pieces in the following order:  Quilt backing Batting  Quilt front  Double fold the edges. First fold to the edge, then up and over the front.   Use clips to hold it in place until you are ready to sew.   I have been making about 20 hexies at a time this way, then I sew them and make another batch.
