Fantastic antique 1890s to early 1900s ribbed brown silk and velvet walking skirt from the late Victorian or early Edwardian era. The fabric is a heavy ribbed silk in a rich caramel brown hue featuring vertical striped arrow point panels of darker brown velvet. Styled with a fitted waistband and ve

"Mend, Reshape, Refashion." That's the first Historical Sew Monthly theme for 2018. Mend or re-shape one of your previously made historical clothing items, or refashion a new one out of something not originally intended as sewing fabric. There couldn't be a more perfect theme to get me back into historical sewing after my year long absence! I made this plaid wool skirt a little over a year ago as a costume for a Christmas play my mom and sister were part of. The skirt in it's original form…

About a year ago, I threw out the last pair of jeans in my closet and vowed to only wear what made me comfortable. Since then, I've been slowly making new garments and giving away clothing that I don't wear. I've been trying to make my skirts as long as possible, but suddenly having everything…

Two 1890s ladies, (sisters?) with matching plaid. The standing lady's skirt is paired with a dark bodice. The pattern is matched to flare away from the waistline over the hips. The seated lady has a skirt cut on a different pattern and a matching bodice. Her skirt looks like it has a gore in front so that the plaid pattern lays flat. I can't quite tell what's going on in the bodice- straight sleeves, a rounded yoke and a large contrasting collar/ stock. Image from My Vintage Visions blog.

I can't believe March is over. Where did the month go? Looking back over my posts this month I realized I never did a “color of the month” for March. So here it is! Ok, so plaid really isn't a color but I've decided to highlight it this month anyway instead of a single color. Plaids are great because they are a combination of many colors! Here are a few lovely examples for you to enjoy! Men's clothing. Man’s Frock Coat, c. 1820 from LACMA Man’s Two-piece Lounge Suit, 1875-1880 from LACMA V&A…

I made myself an 1890s shirtwaist. I'd shared I planned to make one, when I wrote about my corset cover. Since then, I've actually finished it and it's appeared in two separate blog posts (the one about my apron, and the one about the belt), but I haven't actually told you how the shirtwaist came to be. So, I figured it was about time to share all those fun details. Once I finished altering my 1890’s plaid wool skirt, a shirtwaist was the next logical project. A skirt can't be worn alone…

A Frolic through Time: Period Costuming and the Occasional Side Trip: Examining an Antique Length of Warren's "Skirtbone", Boning for the Hems of Mid-1890s Skirts!

Edited April 23, 2021 Today I have something special to add to the research on period methods of adding skirt fullness in the mid-1890s. A length of antique, unused "Skirtbone" produced by the Warren Featherbone Company of Three Elms, Michigan. At just a quarter of an inch wide and about 1/16 inch thick (NOT 1/32" as I have it in the video), it's a springy, sproingy boning. It weighs, well, a feather, and you'd not notice any additional weight in your skirt, I believe. To understand it, you…
