the structure of a double - stranded, multi - stranded human cell is depicted in this diagram

Nucleic acid is an important class of macromolecules found in all cells and viruses. The functions of nucleic acids have to do with the storage and expression of genetic information. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) encodes the information the cell needs to make proteins. A related type of nucleic acid, called ribonucleic acid (RNA), comes in different molecular forms that participate in protein synthesis.

Nucleic acids are made up of nucleotides and are in charge of storing and transmitting basic genetic information. The two most important types of nucleic acids are DNA and RNA. DNA is the storage of genetic information that is passed on from parent to offspring. RNA can convert this information into proteins.

The human body is made up of millions of cells that work to maintain the body's overall system and function. Each cell, in turn, has its own set of processes designed to carry out necessary cell functions. Nucleic acid plays an essential role in coordinating and maintaining individual cell processes throughout the body.
