a diagram showing the phases of an experiment

There are four main stages to an action potential: depolarisation, repolarisation, hyperpolarisation, and the return to resting potential. Voltage-gated ion channels are needed for these processes.

Action potentials are brief, rapid, large changes in the membrane potential in which the potential actually reverses. They are usually initiated as a result of spread from graded potentials. Simil…

“Maintenance of resting membrane potential. The action of Na+/K+ ATPase, Na+ leak channels, and K+ leak channels creates and maintains a resting membrane potential of -70mV” until threshold is reached at ~-55 to -40 mV.

two diagrams showing the different stages of an extreculator fluid and how it works

When an action potential occurs at one node (of Ranvier; whith a lots of voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels) the same intracellular and extracellular currents are created except that the myelin dramatically reduces the current across the membrane so that the current that flows to the next node is strong enough to generate an action potential. This continues down the length of a myelinated axon with the action potential jumping from one node to the next.
