Hello and happy Friday! I have been experimenting with natural dyes (plant-derived dyes) for a while and a few days ago my friend brought some dry black beans home for dinner- immediately I knew I wanted to try to dye some cotton fabric with the bean water, I mean what a good way to get some dye

Here are some dye samples I’ve made using black beans. For column A, I soaked the beans 24 hours. It produced a light purple on silk, and light purple-blue on cotton. The colors aren’t lightfast. For column B, I soaked the beans for 48 hours. It produced a light sage on silk, and light grey-blue … Continue reading Black Bean Dye Samples – Purple, Grey Green, And Blue →

Natural dyeing experiments always seem to surprise, sometimes they're underwhelming and sometimes they're fantastic. This week's experiment falls in the latter category. I love it when that happens. I put pre-washed white cotton fabric scraps … Continue reading Red Cabbage + Baking Soda – Dye Samples →

Tea is rich with tannin (good for gripping onto fabric), is inexpensive, and attaches well to cotton and linen. It typically gives you a light brown color if you don’t use any color modifiers. You can use an iron modifier on the fabric after you dye it with the tea, which will shift your colors to grey, and increase our fabric’s color- and lightfastness. At the iron sulfate stage, you will be able to experiment with different dipping and folding techniques to create patterns on your fabric.

Ella - DIY Wardrobe on Instagram: "Food waste = fabric dye 🧅🥑💗 I love natural dye projects. These are three favorite garments from my dye experiments last year. Best of all: I got to eat every bit of the foods, and the dyes are all made from what would have been waste! Check out my story highlights for the processes of each of these :) I’m still saving avocado skins/pits in my freezer for another dye pot this summer. Full disclosure, looking back that the black bean dye has faded the most…
