This is legit. A few years back I was playing Dead Space 2. I made it all the way to the very end but I was pretty low on ammo so I was struggling to finish the game. Unfortunately I only had one save file - right before the boss burst through and began the final assault. I eventually gave up on the game completely. Since then I've gotten in the habit of rotating between at least two save files. If this sort of thing happens again I'll have an earlier save point to work with.
