I always try to keep my tools very lightweight and minimal, and I thought it might be interesting to share what I took with me on the trip. A few years ago I shared a similar sketching kit, and my current selection of tools differs only slightly. When I go field sketching in the neighborhood, I try to keep my kit very simple so that it can fit into a fanny pack. For longer daytrips, I usually bring a backpack with a few more things (umbrella, camera, food, sitting mat).

This post details what is in the field art kit or outdoor painting kit that I bring on hiking and backpacking trips. I cover how to make your own lightweight kit, the watercolor paints in my palette, which sketchbooks I use, why I paint on (and off) the trail and how you can too!

Many artists, particularly urban sketchers, are quite adept at holding their sketchbooks in their hands while sitting or standing and drawing as well as painting. I’m not one of them. I don’t do well either standing, holding a plate and eating.
