Sculpture gardens are sublime, serene places — like cemeteries without the sorrow. They are hidden oases of calm, places to marvel over beautiful manmade forms in rugged natural surrounds. Cornwall has the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden at St Ives, where tactile geometric shapes rise o

The Skeith Stone, between Kilrenny and Cellardyke. With Pictish carving, it probably dates from about the 7th century. The carving is fairly faint but easily visible when sunlit from the side (south-west-ish). Skeith has been adopted as the name for the new health centre about 500 metres away. I would love to hear which of these photos are your favorites. You can find the stories behind these photos at…

Kilnasaggart Pillar Stone, Co Armagh Standing at 2.8 metres high the Kilnasaggart pillar stone is probably the oldest dateable stone monument in Ireland. The Pillar stands in a small enclosure in the townland of Edenappa in County Armagh. The Pillar stands at the edge of a graveyard that was excavated in the later part of the sixties, these excavations revealed both stone built and dug graves. There are several small stones lying around the standing stone and some of these stones bear crosses. We found the Recumbent Drombeg Stone Circle in a pastoral valley that was very similar to the one where Coppinger's Court is situated. The lovely recumbent stone circle is also known as The Druid's Altar, and from its location on the edge of a rocky terrace, worshippers presided over a view that gently sweeps down to the Atlantic ocean a mere 1.6 kilometres away.
