This moveable chicken coop was designed to keep costs low, be easily converted between use for meat birds or egg laying chickens, and also to be easy to clean (just move forward to fresh ground, and voila, a clean coop!) These plans were written by real homesteaders who actually built two of these coops for our own small homestead over 3 years ago! We still use them to this day - one for our egg laying flock & the other for our meat birds. ☺️

If you want the build plans to make this for your flock, let me know! 🛠️

1.3K views · 23K reactions | Getting backyard chickens has been EXCEPTIONALLY easy and extremely rewarding. It takes minutes of our day each day to take care of them, plus a few projects seasonally like cleaning out the coop. In exchange, they do a whole lot to take care of us.

Along with providing delicious eggs, our chickens help us with the fertilizing, the aerating, the weeding, the mosquito and fly swatting, the garden clean up, and the compost pile.

They’re out there working hard 365 days a year, no matter the weather. We reward them with our kitchen scraps, and they reward us with hilarious antics like chasing each other around the yard for hot dogs bits and catching finches when they’re bored (this literally happens).

Essentially, it involves letting chicken manure and bedding material like straw or wood shavings accumulate and decompose right inside the coop. Instead of cleaning out the bedding frequently, you just keep adding fresh layers on top to absorb moisture and control odor. We start with a clean coop and a layer of bedding material about 4-6 inches deep. **Regular maintenance includes adding new bedding as needed and turning it occasionally to aerate and promote decomposition.**One of the key benefits is that this method creates a healthier environment for the chickens. The composting process generates heat, which helps reduce harmful bacteria and parasites, and minimizes ammonia buildu Deep Litter Method, Nutrient Cycle, Chicken Manure, Composting Process, Wood Shavings, New Bedding, Mother Earth News, Material Bed, Chicken Farm

When I say it smells good in here, trust me. 😍
