Swedish naval squadron under Vice-Admiral De Prou at Narva, May 1704

In spring of 1704 Swedes decided to send a naval squadron to attack new Russian fortifications in the mouth of Neva (later S. Peterburg). It consisted of 6 ships-of-line (Westmanland, 62; Halland, 56; Wachtmeister, 40; Goteborg; Wrede; Norrkoping), 8 frigates (Reval, Stralsund, Falcon, Eleonora, Saurenfive, Dauphin, Postilion, Kischenfell), 2 brigantines (Goya, Castor), 2 mortar ships (Thunder, Vesuvius), one hospital ship, one ship with provision & an aviso - totaled 462 cannons & 2340 sailors excluding soldiers. The squadron was under command of Admiral Cornelius Anckarstjerna, Vice-Admiral Jakob de Prou & Schoutbynacht Claes Sparre von Sövdeborg. By the end of April of 1704 all ships except Anckarstjerna’s Westmanland arrived in Reval. Swedish captive captain Georg Stael von Holstein told that de Prou’s ship was of 58 cannons, other ships-of-line were of 40, 30 & 28 cannons. Brigantines were of 12 cannons. Landing party was about 2,000 men: infantry regiments Otto Rehbinder (about 600 men in 8 coys, incl. one of dragoons) & Boguslaw von der Pahlen (1,200 in 8 coys) & a battalion under Bruhn (no any info).
First Swedes sent a convoy of 9 armed ships (frigates & brigantines?) & 8 transports to supply a garrison of Narva which has a shortage of provision. They arrived to the mouth of Narova river on 7 of May, but couldn’t enter the river because of wrong wind. Next day Russian Corps under Petr Apraxin came to the Narova. It consisted of 3 weak infantry regiments (Shakhowski, Titov & Bilits) & Suwas Dragoons – totaled 2,456 men with 3 6-pdr & 6 3-pdr cannons. The same day Russians built a battery at the river’s mouth. On 9 of May the weather improved & two Swedish ships sailed into the river. They were met by Russian battery & had to retreat.
On 21 of May De Prou arrived with the rest of squadron. Now he had 35 ships: 17 armed & 18 transports. The same night Swedes disembarked Rehbinder regiment on the left bank of Narova. On 22 of May it marched to Narva & joined the garrison. Horn sent 300 foot & 200 of cavalry to meet it, but Russians were too weak to attack.
On 24 of May several Swedish ships, incl. both mortar ships, attacked the Russian battery, but without success. The next day De Prou returned to Reval, where he met with Anckarstjerna with Westmanland. Soon the Swedish squadron sailed to Retusaari, but it’s an other story.

Swedish squadron on Peipus Lake, June-July 1703

Previously I wrote about Swedish squadron on Peipus Lake (link) & its disaster in the battle of Embach (link). In the beginning of June 1703 Dorpat’s commandant Skytte sent the squadron of 14 ships to raise Russian settlements near Pskov. One of the landing parties was cut-off & destroyed by Pskov Streltzy under colonel Ivan Bashmakov. Swedish captives told that the squadron was of the following ships (no ship names, only a number of cannons & crews):

Swedish squadron on Peipus Lake, May 1704

Swedish brigantine “Ulrica” from Dorpat squadron
Source: Kroon K. Kolme lovi ja greifi all pohjasojas. Tallin, 2007.

As I wrote in the previous message, Sweden didn’t have any naval forces on Peipus & Ladoga lakes at the outbreak of the Great Northern war. The creation of a squadron on Peipus started in spring of 1701, when Amiralitetskollegium sent carpenter J. Falck to Dorpat. In the beginning of July vice-admiral Gideon v. Numers arrived to Dorpat with a royal order to increase activities. By autumn 1701 riverine squadron under captain Magnus Hökflycht (Hökeflycht) consisted of brigantine Elephant (10 cannons), yacht Vivat (6 cannons) & 4 small sloops.
By summer of 1702 the squadron was under command of commander Carl Gustav Loschern von Hertzfeld. Hökflycht was his second-in-command. Yacht Vivat of 1701 was sunk by Russians on Peipus in 1702. By the end of the year a new Vivat was built on a shipyard on Embach river. Also in 1702 were built Carl XII (12 cannons) & other smaller ships. By May of 1704 the squadron was of 13 ships: Victoria (6), Numers (4), Wachtmeister (14), Horn (4), Carlscrona (12), Stromfeld (5), Carl XII/Carolus (12), Narva (8), Schlippenbach (4), Elephant (6), Ulrica (10), Skytte (8), Vivat (6).
On 3 May 1704 the squadron under Loschern left Dorpat to Peipus lake to catch a Russian squadron. According to Swedish sources 13 ships had 99 cannons, 320 sailors & 250 soldiers from Dorpat garrison. Next day they were encountered on river Embach near town Kaster by Russian troops under GM Nicolas von Werden. Carolus under Loscharn command was exploded by its crew. The rest ships were taken by Russians. According to Sheremetev’s campaign journal Russians took 86 cannons but some of them Swedes had time to throw in water. So, the table presents 78 cannons. Also Swedish list of ships includes Carlscrona (12 cannons), but the Russian one – Dorpat with 10.
