The term is derived frae the Greek wird anemos, meanin wind, is uised tae describe ony airspeed measurement instrument uised in meteorology or aerodynamics. The first kent description o an anemometer wis gien bi Leon Battista Alberti aropnd 1450.[1]

Anemometers can be dividit intae twa classes: those that measur the wind's speed, an those that measur the wind's pressur; but as thare is a close connection atween the pressur an the speed, an anemometer designed for ane will gie information aboot baith.
