Clayton takes its name from the Clayton faimily who awned lairge pairts o laund aroond the aurie, includin Clayton Vale, throu which the River Medlock flows (separating Clayton frae neebourin Newton Heath). As Newton Heath L&YR F.C., they played at North Road in Newton Heath frae their formation in 1878 till 1893 when they muivit tae a grund on Bank Street, afore muivin tae Old Trafford in 1910.
