A Couple More Finishes

Two more finishes!

A couple of years ago I made six inch Nine Patch blocks as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) project and also it was one of the last blocks I made to empty out my 2.5 inch scrap bin. Now instead of keeping scraps in bins by size I try to use scraps as they are made or if scraps are larger chunks I now store them by color.

Well, I made three tops but I still have not used up all the Nine Patches. Last year I quilted the Snowball/Nine Patch that used the yellow, red, pink and orange Nine Patches.  For these two quilts I used the Nine Patch as the center for blocks.

Sister's Choice
40 x 60

For this one I used the lighter colored Nine Patches for the centers of some Sister's Choice blocks that finish at 10 inches.

I quilted in the ditch between blocks and then stitched on the diagonals.  I'm not sure if you can tell or not but I used a large Easter egg print for the binding.  Someone gave it to me a long time ago and I could never figure out how to use it in a donation quilt for kids so that it didn't look like Easter eggs. Since most of the colors in the fabric were in the quilt I thought I'd give it a try.

Framed Nine Patch
40 x 60

For this one I used the multicolored Nine Patches as the centers for Framed Nines that finish at 10 inches.

The frames were also multicolored 2.5 inch scraps.

I quilted it with horizontal and vertical lines. The binding was also multicolored - a stripe.  It all makes for a pretty wild and crazy quilt.

And sew on...

Nine Patch November: Sister's Choice and Framed Tops

Two Tops
Both 40 x 60

I mentioned in an earlier blog post that I wanted to concentrate this month on using both three and six inch Nine Patches. The Parts Department needs an inventory reduction!

Last year, I finally emptied out my 2.5 inch scrap bin and one of the last blocks I made was Nine Patches.  Since then whenever I have 2.5 inch left overs  I have also made Nine Patches.

I picked out some of the lighter colored Nine Patches and turned them into 10 inch (finished) Sister's Choice blocks.

I had set aside a little box of pastel colored scrap chunks to make some Sawtooth Stars blocks for baby quilts so used some of those scraps to cut the pieces for the HSTs and squares needed to turn the Nine Patches into Sister's Choice blocks.

I also have a little drawer with neutral scrap chunks that doesn't seem to have a bottom so that's what I used for the neutral backgrounds.

This one is a little bit wilder. I picked out the multicolored Nine Patches for this one and turned them into 10 inch (finished) Framed Nine Patches. Actually they could be called Happy Nine Patches because I made them the same way I make Happy Blocks.

I also had a little box of multicolored scrap chunks to use for the frames.
I tried to pick out mostly blue multicolor but didn't have quite enough frames so added in a few orange frames.

Next I will be working on a larger top that uses red and yellow nine patches. And I'm working on several tops that use 3 inch Nine Patches. More on that later.

Bits and Pieces in Aqua, Teal, Turquoise and Blue-Green

My Postage Stamp Pandemic (PSP20-21) Blocks have been on hold for awhile because I ran out of postage stamps. I've slowly been trying to replenish my supply but then a friend sent me a gallon bag of postage stamps so now I'm back in business, thank goodness! Meanwhile I'm still cutting some because I don't think you can ever have too many postage stamps.

Continuing on from last weeks blocks made from 3.5 and 2 inch strips cut from scrap chunks I made some Puss in the Corner blocks.

This year I've been trying to empty out the 1. 5 inch scrap bin and I'm pretty close to empty now. I've been making 5.5 inch (unfinished rails) and 18 patches with 1.5 x 2.5 inch pieces in light and darks of the same color.

Then I played around a bit and framed some 3 inch Nine Patches. I wasn't sure I liked how they looked together so...

...framed a couple of light corners thinking I could reverse light and dark corners. I wasn't sure I liked that configuration all that much either so I tried out...

...alternating light and dark corners in a few different colors.  The jury is still out on this one. I'm thinking these will go into the orphan block box.  Or I may go with the light corners/dark sides only and set them on point or maybe...

And speaking of Nine Patches...last year I made six inch (finished) Nine Patches with 2.5 inch scraps when I was emptying my 2.5 inch width scrap bin. Now I'm turning the light and pastel Nine Patches into Sister's Choice blocks. This was the only Nine Patch that looked like a light aqua but now that pieces have been added to turn it into a Sister's Choice it looks like it is light blue.

Nine Patch Metamorphosis

You may or may not know that last year I entirely cleaned out my 2.5 inch width scrap bin. The very last blocks to come out of there was Nine Patches for the Parts Department. And after I emptied that scrap bin I have been making Nine Patch blocks every time I have 2.5 inch scraps left over from any project.   So now the Parts Department has a lot of Nine Patch inventory and the Nine Patches are in their own bin.  I thought since this month's Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color is blue I would dig...

...through the Nine Patches and pull out the blues. I also tried to divide all of them up into stacks for future quilts.

First I pulled all of the dark blue nine patches out of the bin and combined them with some red HSTs and light blue HSTs and made some of these four teen inch blocks (don't know the name so I'll call it churn dash variation).  So from now on whenever I end up with dark blue nine patches they will get made into these blocks until I end up with 20 blocks for a quilt. I am keeping with this colorway for these blocks so no other color of nine patch will be used in the centers.

Then I pulled out the pastel/light blue Nine Patches and made some ten inch Sister's Choice blocks. I sorted out a stack of other light colored nine patches and those will also be made into Sister's Choice blocks.

The bright blue nine patches will be combined with other bright blue nine patches and made into an Irish Chain quilt.   The red and yellow nine patches will be made into framed nine patches.  I have a few other sorted piles and am still thinking of what I will do with those. Maybe Sawtooth Stars or set on point or  maybe alternating with snowballs or hourglasses or...

39Ps

I have lots of little 3 inch 9 patches. Some are ironed...

...some are not.

I usually make the when I get to the end of a piece of fabric and have at least 3 - 1.5 inch strips. But sometimes I just throw that end piece into the 4.5 inch scrap pile.

I've turned the little nine patches into 5 inch Sister's Choice blocks and made the above quilt.

I've added a few navy hexies and bright solid triangles to the bright little nine patches and made a Jack's Chain quilt

I'm working on Jack's Chain #2 which is bigger and uses darker little nine patches, neutral hexies and muslin triangles.

I also have a couple of other ideas (only in my head for now) for these little cuties.

I'd like to swap some 3 inch 9 patches.
See the tab at the top of my blog for further info.
Due May 15
I've already received some from 2 swappers but haven't peeked into the packages yet.

Use those scraps!

Sister's Choice

Sister's Choice
60 x 80

I started with some swapped 6 inch nine patches in blue and tan civil war reproduction fabrics with a red center.

Then I added a tan background and blue star points and continued with red in the center sections of the outside of the nine patch to make a Sister's Choice block.

Then I sewed them all randomly together since I don't have a design wall and since it is civil war repro fabrics I didn't figure they had design walls back then either.  As you can see sometimes random sewing ends up looking not so random and the same blocks end up next to each other in a quilt.  Doesn't bother me.  Most people I give my quilts to don't hold them up to inspect layouts.

This quilt is for my husband to replace that old one he uses in his recliner.

Sometimes when I look at the quilt I see this design  (four patch in the middle) instead of the Sister's Choice.

I quilted it very simply with straight and diagonal lines on my DSM and bound it in red.

I used a wide backing printed with tan roses.

The overall quilting.

This was also my goal #3 of my Q3 Goals for the   2015 Finish Along.

This WIP is gone so I'll be linking today to WIPs Be Gone at A Quilting Reader's Garden
