Teenage Tom Petties’ fourth album, Rally The Tropes, finds the slacker jangle-punk band at their most unhinged yet. Recorded live over two frantic days at Big Nice Studio with Bradford Krieger (Friendship, Horse Jumper of Love), its eight tracks blast past in 18 minutes of hollered back-and-forth vocals, fried feedback, and happy mistakes. TTP cranked firmly into the red.
After time together in both England and the US, vocalist/guitarist Tom Brown (also of jangle-pop duo Rural France) wrote the record as a celebration of what the band represents and has become: five previous strangers who somehow came together across the Atlantic to bang out fuzz-laden songs that were only originally meant for the bedroom or garage.
As Tom says: “It still feels like a minor miracle this happened. When the five of us are together, it’s just so fun and pure. I really wanted some songs that would allow us to capture that excitement of when we’re in a room or on stage together, just going at it…not worried about perfection, just playing with joy.”
A love letter to DIY rock ‘n’ roll, Rally The Tropes is a record (and title) that splits the difference between AC/DC and GbV. One moment it’s throwing out insane Thin Lizzy dual-guitar lines (Faculty), the next it’s talking of ‘bounce house bad boys’ as an Oasis-sized riff pounds you over the head (Kudzu Pop).
“I pictured us walking on stage to ridiculous intro music in front of a huge crowd,” Tom adds. “I wanted the record to feel that big and unpredictable, with as much raw garage energy as Brad could squeeze out of us.”
Alongside Tom, TTP features Jim Quinn (bass), Galen Richmond and James Brown (guitars), and Jeff Hamm (drums). It’s their second full-band effort, following 2023’s Hotbox Daydreams, an indie blogosphere favorite that landed on multiple end-of-year lists (Small Albums, Add To Wantlist, Circuit Sweet).
As Rosy Overdrive put it: “Every song on Hotbox Daydreams could’ve been a single. Welcome to the next generation of Teenage Tom Petties, bigger and better than ever.”
After a run of their best US shows yet, supporting pals Perennial, TTP return to UK stages this October to celebrate Rally The Tropes.

The Tubs are masters of one of my favorite kinds of song: catchy chorus with absolute downer lyrics, especially ones that focus on how much of a loser the singer is. This album adds more depths of sadness than their previous effort, as this focuses on the trauma that was left in the wake of the suicide of the singer's mother. Yet, it's still somehow very catchy and enjoyable. I can picture shouting along with many of these choruses in a pub somewhere. Ben
