Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII, died at Kimbolton Castle on this day in British History, 7 January 1536. Catherine had been the Queen of England from 1509 to 1533, but Henry’s desire for an heir caused him to banish Catherine from court and marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn. Although Pope Clement VII refused to annul Henry’s marriage to Catherine, Henry carried through with his marriage of Anne, a move that directly led to England’s break with the Catholic Church.

This Michael Sittow painting of Mary Magdalene is thought to be a portrait of Catherine. It was painted when she was still a Spanish princess, before going to England to marry Prince Arthur in 1501. She is probably no older than 15.
