Trauma can be passed down through generations and you may feel the effects of trauma even if you didn’t experience it directly…  When parents or grandparents, or even great-grandparents have experienced trauma that has been left unresolved, this can be passed to the future generations of the family.  This is particularly seen when big traumatic events have occurred such as genocide, wars, big natural disasters or generations of oppression.  This means you may experience symptoms of trauma, despite not being present for the traumatic event.  These symptoms can however be difficult to detect as intergenerational trauma as they often present as common mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression.
