Rainbow Sprouts Quilt

Rainbow Sprouts is a multicolored, beginner-friendly, scrapbuster quilt pattern that was first published in Make Modern Magazine's Issue #68.

Rainbow Sprouts

Rainbow Sprouts is now available as a standalone pattern in my Etsy Shop.

Made with Island Batik's Basics, Rainbow Sprouts is the answer to the question - Why do leaves have to be (mostly) green?

Yellow, Orange & Red

Each leaf has a dark and a light fabric and the number of those combinations is only limited by your imagination.

Teal and Green too

Finishing at 61" by 84", Rainbow Sprouts uses 16 fabrics (8 light and 8 dark) plus Solid Black (Stems) and Egg White (Background).

It is an excellent way to showcase your favorite fabrics. I am showing off Island Batik Basics including Chambray & Harbor (Blues), Flamingo & Candy (Pinks), Banana & Taxi (Yellows), Chameleon & Parakeet (Teals), Mystic & Caribbean (Aquas), Ballerina & Rosewood (Reddish Purples), Marmalade & Flame (Oranges), and Pistachio & Apple (Greens).

Love these Colors

To make Rainbow Sprouts, you need 4.5 yards of background fabric and the rest can easily come from your stash. Make it scrappy with many fabrics or control the chaos with a monochromatic color scheme.

Thank you, Paul

I had fun making this quilt and these hues are yummy enough to eat. The pattern is super simple but that is not all.

Glaze (Island Batik Neutral) Backing

Let me show you the Bonus Project. The off-cuts make a smaller quilt that is cute as a button.

Bonus Project

I am calling it Rainbow Seeds. We went to the children's playground to take some fun pictures.

Rainbow Seeds, 44" by 55"

Island Batik fabrics are wider than most fabrics, so I still had some leftovers. I used them to piece a fun backing, making sure to use every bit of the gorgeous fabrics.

The Rainbow Sprouts Quilt Pattern is detailed with step by step guidance and colored graphics for each step.  I am offering it at a 25% discount till Sunday, 5/10/26.

Yes, of course there is a giveaway too.  If you'd like a copy of the Rainbow Sprouts Quilt Pattern, leave me a comment on this post answering any of the following three questions.

What is the best Mother's Day gift you have received? What is the best Mother's Day gift that you gave? What is the best book you've read in 2026?

If you don't want to participate in the giveaway, leave me a comment anyway but mention the no giveaway thing. I will announce the winners next week.

Update - The two winners are #1 and #14. Emails have been sent.

Accuquilt: Covering the World

Covering the World: One Quilt at a Time

Beginning in June 2023, AccuQuilt is partnering up with Island Batik in a pay-it-forward campaign called “Covering the World: One Quilt at a Time.” If you wish to participate in this effort, you can find the details here.

I chose to make two quilts - Sea Salt and Rainbow Kiss.

Sea Salt is a baby sized version based on my Masala Box pattern. I picked out bright blues and greens from the Island Batik Basics (these are available all year round) and paired them with Island Batik solid white background.

Sea Salt

Quilted using my walking foot, this cute baby quilt came together in just one weekend.  The binding is Island Batik Solid Light Grey.

Baby ready!

Sea Salt finished at 36" square and will join other quilts (from my quilt guild) going to the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital's Premie Graduation. These quilts accompany the premie babies when they "graduate" from NICU to go home.

Brightness

I will be handing Sea Salt over to Jeanne in my quilt guild who takes them to the Fair Oaks Hospital.

I made Rainbow Kiss for GSAFE. GSAFE increases the capacity of LGBTQ youth and students, educational staff, and families to create school environments where all LGBTQ youth and students thrive.

Using Fabrics from Island Batiks Blenders (available all year round), I pieced the strips in a rainbow-ish order.

Then I cross cut the strip set into strips and arranged and rearranged them till I was happy with it.

Everyone is welcome!

I quilted, following the seams with my walking foot.  The binding is Sprinkles (Island Batik Neutral). Rainbow Kiss finished at 42" by 46" and will join other quilts in Wisconsin for the annual GSAFE auction later this year.

Here they are both - Sea Salt and Rainbow Kiss, my contribution to the Accuquilt's Cover the World event.

Off we go!

Synergy Quilt Pattern Release!!!

It was about one year ago, when I first doodled the idea that became Synergy. I first made Synergy in Rainbow Fabrics on a Light Gray background, provided by Island Batiks.

The second version was in Tantalizing Teals on a Yellow background.

Since then, I have been playing in EQ8, with different Island Batik collections.

In Lace & Grace (Fall 2021 Collection)

In Playful Purples (Island Batik Foundations)

In Interurban (Fall 2021)

But I am so looking forward to the different versions that are cooking in the following studios of North America.

1. Mari of Academic Quilter - Thursday, April 21, 2022
2. Alycia of Alycia Quilts - Friday, April 22, 2022
3. Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts - Saturday, April 23, 2022
4. Bonnie of Institches with Bonnie - Sunday, April 24, 2022
5. Roseanne of Home Sewn By Us - Monday, April 25, 2022

Make sure to visit their blogs to see their versions of Synergy. Follow the instructions, and leave a comment to participate in the giveaway.

I have been working and re-working on the pattern and today it is ready!!!

The 13-page pattern includes detailed instructions with colorful graphics for every step of the block construction and layout. Tips for scraps and precuts are also provided. And a Coloring Page is included the end so that you can make your own color/fabric choices.

Synergy is on sale for 25% off till April 27, 2022.

I will be sharing with all my favorite linky parties. See full list on the sidebar. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Synergy in Make Modern #44

I have news!!!

My pattern Synergy is in the Make Modern Magazine, Issue 44.

Synergy in Make Modern #44

Meet Synergy. Measuring 56" by 70", Synergy is made entirely with Island Batik Solids, provided to me free of charge by Island Batik. It is good to be an ambassador :-)

Orange Foliage, Rainbow Quilt

My favorite :-)

Breeze was a Brat

More Fall Foliage

Oh my beauty!

The quilt was completed in November 2021. The  pictures were taken on November 14, 2021. All instructions and pictures were sent on November 20, 2021. And then I had to sit tight till NOW.

Sitting Tight?

Sunny Side Up

You have no idea how hard these last few months have been for me. This is a very big deal to keep bottled for this long a time. Therefore I am relieved (thrilled and giddy with happiness too) that I can now share this news with you.

Forgive me if I got a little trigger-happy :-)

Sunny

I highly recommend the Make Modern magazine. Whereas a single pattern may cost about $12, you can get the entire issue (with 10 terrific patterns) for just $12. The 105 pages are chock full of quilty goodness with detailed patterns, features and articles!!!

But there is more. Isn't there always?

I wanted to see Synergy pattern in different colorways. Using EQ8, I modeled Synergy in Tantalizing Teals. But got stuck on the choice of background color. White was too plain, Black was too dark and Grey was too dull. But Yellow was perfect.

There was just one problem. I had about 12" of Island Batik Solid Yellow.  I needed 2.5 yards. I reached out to Maryellen, a fellow IB ambassador who owns the Etsy store MaryMackMadeMine. Maryellen rushed the fabric to me. I recommend her Etsy store for all your Island Batik needs.

Synergy in Island Batik Tantalizing Teals

Thanks to Maryellen, I was able to complete the quilt and shoot pictures to time this blogpost with the publication of the Make Modern, Issue 44.

Frozen Pond = Poor Reflection

Hello Yellow!!!

Synergy Goes Wild!

Lighting up the Urban Landscape

Fire on Ice!!!

Paul: Is this your January challenge quilt for Island Batik?
Me: It can be.
Paul: But?
Me: But I made another quilt as my response to the challenge.
Paul: You could've killed two birds with one stone.
Me: But I have so many stones...
Paul: And you like throwing stones?
Me: I like playing with fabric, especially such gorgeous fabric.
Paul: Why stop at one when you can make two?
Me: Exactly!!! You totally get me :-)

Cold Weather, Hot Quilt!!!

Although Synergy (in Island Batik Tantalizing Teals with Yellow background) fulfills all requirements of the January IB challenge (Step by Step), I am sharing it here as a Synergy pattern.  All fabrics were provided by Island Batiks.
