Grzegorz Ryś (born 9 February 1964)[1] is a Polish Roman Catholic bishop and historian. He has been the Archbishop of Łódź since 2017.
Early life and education
[change | change source]Grzegorz Ryś was born in Kraków. He studied theology at Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków. He was ordained a priest in 1988 by Cardinal Franciszek Macharski.[1]
Ecclesiastical career
[change | change source]In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as an auxiliary bishop of Kraków. He was consecrated by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz. In 2017, Pope Francis appointed him as the Archbishop of Łódź, succeeding Marek Jędraszewski.[2][1]
In 2020, Pope Francis appointed him as a member of the Dicastery for Bishops. On October 4, 2023, he was named a member of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.[3]
On July 9, 2023, Pope Francis announced that Grzegorz Ryś would be made a cardinal. He will be given the titular church of Saints Cyril and Methodius.[1][4]
