Shelbyville Manhattan was the founder of Shelbyville and former partner of Jebediah Springfield.

History

In the historical account told by Abraham Simpson, Shelbyville Manhattan is described as the man who separated from Jebediah Springfield after a disagreement over how their new settlement should be founded. Their split occurred when Springfield refused to establish a town where one could marry his or her cousin; Shelbyville considered cousins “so attractive” and believed that this was the whole purpose of their journey to found a new community. Unable to agree, the group divided, with Shelbyville Manhattan leaving to form Shelbyville while Springfield went on to establish Springfield.
