At Springfield Elementary School, the band was preparing for an upcoming recital under the direction of Mr. Largo. During rehearsal, Lisa Simpson broke away from the written arrangement of “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” and improvised on her saxophone, but Mr. Largo stopped her and insisted that she follow the music exactly as written. Lisa reluctantly complied, and later, after being warned not to repeat her “unbridled creativity” at band practice, she left feeling that her artistic expression was not welcome in the school band.[2]
Lisa Simpson quit the school band after losing confidence in her musical future when a career test and a music instructor discouraged her ambitions. After a period of rebellion at school, she regained her confidence and returned to playing her saxophone in the band.[3]
The school held band auditions to determine seating assignments for the upcoming school year. The most competitive audition was for first-chair saxophone, where Lisa Simpson faced new student Allison Taylor. Both students impressed music teacher Dewey Largo with their talent and engaged in a spirited musical duel as they tried to outperform one another. After a closely contested audition, Alison was awarded the first-chair position, while Lisa finished as second chair.[4]
During the teachers' strike at Springfield Elementary School, during one practice session, the band performed "Pop Goes the Weasel," a piece they normally would not have played under Dewey Largo supervision. The performance was interrupted when Largo unexpectedly returned and put an end to the unsanctioned rehearsal.[5]
During a sold-out Springfield Elementary School recital, much of the orchestra was absent because many students were undergoing appendectomies. As a result, the performance was reduced to Lisa Simpson on saxophone, Martin Prince on triangle, and Ralph Wiggum attempting to play a flute. The audience initially reacted negatively to their rendition of "Stars and Stripes Forever," but Lisa transformed the piece with a jazz-inspired solo, earning enthusiastic applause.[1]
Once, the band was given a chance to play at any event, in which Edith Knickertwist paid $4000 for the band to play at her 'event'.[6]
