While ideally it is done fast but just like everything it requires you do it slow at first. It's important to understand the process where the abdomen pulls in with each stroke sending the diaphragm up and then the abdomen resets between each repetition.

If you don't build this up slowly then your abdominals will get fatique easily and you will feel disheartened to continue the practice. That's why, slow and steady increase the pace over time. Hope it helps.
