The outdoor design for an urban dwelling is something totally different to a sprawling suburban or country yard. There’s much less space, to be sure. But you also have to take in mind your neighbors (and how much you want to see of them) and also what feels appropriate for your area and even your type of home.

If you live in a typical suburban house, chances are good you have a side yard — a barren little strip of land between the side of the house and the fence covered in grass or rocks and probably not much else. But one California homeowner, instead of seeing an awkward, useless space, only saw potential. Clued in by the sun streaming through her bedroom window, Rebekah realized her sunny side yard would be the ideal place to grow vegetables.

A few years ago, the couple hired Terremoto, a landscape design firm known for its “wildness and creativity,” as Ann puts it, to replace their patchy lawn with a garden that would fuel their young daughters’ imaginations. Lead designer Sarah Samynathan’s vision—“to contrast the clean architecture of the midcentury modern house with a soft, playful meadow”—delivered just the kind of landscape the couple had in mind.
