Vegeta is a versatile HTTP load testing tool built out of a need to drill HTTP services with a constant request rate. It can be used both as a command line utility and a library. You can install Vegeta using the Homebrew package manager on Mac OS X. Both the library and the CLI are versioned with SemVer v2.0.0. After v8.0.0, the two components are versioned separately to better isolate breaking changes to each. CLI releases are tagged with cli/vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH and published on the Github releases page. As for the library, new versions are tagged with both lib/vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH and vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH. The latter tag is required for compatibility with go mod. The JSON format makes integration with programs that produce targets dynamically easier. Each target is one JSON object in its own line. The method and url fields are required. If present, the body field must be base64 encoded. The generated JSON Schema defines the format in detail. -

bootstrap K3s over SSH in < 60s
k3sup is a lightweight utility to get from zero to KUBECONFIG with k3s on any local or remote VM. All you need is ssh access and the k3sup binary to get kubectl access immediately. The tool is written in Go and is cross-compiled for Linux, Windows, MacOS and even on Raspberry Pi. This tool uses ssh to install k3s to a remote Linux host. You can also use it to join existing Linux hosts into a k3s cluster as agents. First, k3s is installed using the utility script from Rancher, along with a flag for your host's public IP so that TLS works properly. The kubeconfig file on the server is then fetched and updated so that you can connect from your laptop using kubectl. k3sup was developed to automate what can be a very manual and confusing process for many developers, who are already short on time. Once you've provisioned a VM with your favorite tooling, k3sup means you are only 60 seconds away from running kubectl get pods on your own computer. -

gRPC Go has support for "interceptors", i.e. middleware that is executed either on the gRPC Server before the request is passed onto the user's application logic, or on the gRPC client either around the user call. It is a perfect way to implement common patterns: auth, logging, tracing, metrics, validation, retries, rate limiting, and more, which can be great generic building blocks that make it easy to build multiple microservices. Especially for observability signals (logging, tracing, metrics) interceptors offer semi-auto-instrumentation that improves the consistency of your observability and allows great correlation techniques (e.g. exemplars and trace ID in logs). Demo-ed in examples. This repository offers ready-to-use middleware that implements gRPC interceptors with examples. Extract internal monitoring data from application logs for collection in a time-series database. mtail is a tool for extracting metrics from application logs to be exported into a timeseries database or timeseries calculator for alerting and dashboarding. It fills a monitoring niche by being the glue between applications that do not export their own internal state (other than via logs) and existing monitoring systems, such that system operators do not need to patch those applications to instrument them or writing custom extraction code for every such application. The extraction is controlled by mtail programs which define patterns and actions. Metrics are exported for scraping by a collector as JSON or Prometheus format over HTTP, or can be periodically sent to a collectd, StatsD, or Graphite collector socket. Precompiled binaries for released versions are available in the Releases page on Github. Using the latest production release binary is the recommended way of installing mtail. -

Simulating bad network connections so you can build better systems
Testing distributed systems under hard failures like network partitions and instance termination is critical, but it's also important we test them under less catastrophic conditions because this is what they most often experience. Comcast is a tool designed to simulate common network problems like latency, bandwidth restrictions, and dropped/reordered/corrupted packets. It works by wrapping up some system tools in a portable(ish) way. On BSD-derived systems such as OSX, we use tools like ipfw and pfctl to inject failure. On Linux, we use iptables and tc. Comcast is merely a thin wrapper around these controls. Windows support may be possible with wipfw or even the native network stack, but this has not yet been implemented in Comcast and may be at a later date. On Linux, Comcast supports several options: device, latency, target/default bandwidth, packet loss, protocol, and port number. -

deej is an open-source hardware volume mixer for Windows and Linux PCs. It lets you use real-life sliders (like a DJ!) to seamlessly control the volumes of different apps (such as your music player, the game you're playing and your voice chat session) without having to stop what you're doing. Control your microphone's input level. Lightweight desktop client, consuming around 10MB of memory. Runs from your system tray. Helpful notifications to let you know if something isn't working. The sliders are connected to 5 (or as many as you like) analog pins on an Arduino Nano/Uno board. They're powered from the board's 5V output (see schematic). The board connects via a USB cable to the PC. The code running on the Arduino board is a C program constantly writing current slider values over its serial interface. The PC runs a lightweight Go client in the background. This client reads the serial stream and adjusts app volumes according to the given configuration file. -
