Hi everybody. First, congratulations for your work and thank you for your decision to share it. I'm a guitarist and my intention is to do some lives with an acoustic guitar and both Rakarrak and SooperLooper. In order to do this, I'm using some USB pedal keys, and I need to set the same pedals both to change track in SooperLooper and to change preset in Rakarrack. The problem is that the "+" and "-" keys are the only keys that SooperLooper can't learn, so I was wondering if there's a way to change shortcuts in Rakarrack, since at the moment there's not an easy way to make the software "learn" shortcuts by GUI. I'm not used with programming at all, anyway I compiled Rakarrack from git and tried to edit «rakarrack.fl» with Fluid (as suggested here, maybe for a similar problem https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1639367.html ) but I'm just fishing in the dark. I searched the whole file for the "+" and "-" shortcuts in order to edit it, but I found nothing. Am I proceeding in the right way? How do I set them, i.e., to "8" and "9" keys? This thing is very important to me as it would make the perspective of imminent lives more real and it would make this poor student save some money too lol. Thank you in advance. Andrea Iacono |

Hello again. I've experimented some curious behavior in Rakarrack (RK). It behaves different when I call it the same way (command line parameters and configuration) but adding parameter "--no-gui". When I start RK with GUI it reacts (I can see lights in buttons and hear the incoming signal with effects applied) when I switch on/off effects with my pedalboard via MIDI, but If I use it without gui it doesn't respond to any switching (you can here the incoming untouched). This didn't happen before, I think. So maybe it has to do with the fact that I changed recently RK's MIDI listening channel to 16, instead of channel 1 by default. So maybe this issue has to do with Rakarrack not taking the configuration. I've checked configuration file when running without gui and it is what I configured, just reading it in a text editor, it's the same as with gui. Note: Every time I run RK I see messages like: " Too many levels linked..." ... or something like that. I supposed that it was because of having RK's configuration directory linked with a symbolic link to another place in the file system where It is placed, but I tested with just the directory not linked and messages are still there. Note2: I also thought that it had to do with lack of free harddisk memory available on root partition, or with Raspberry PI lack of resources, but I guess that if it works with GUI it should work without given that it should have more resources available. Thanks in advance. -- Carlos sanchiavedraz * Musix GNU+Linux http://www.musix.es |

I would like to bring back just for a moment the question about making possible to control individual effect's preset via MIDI. I've achieved by now a headless FX+Looper Box based on Raspberry PI+Rackarrack+Sooperlooper with some additives and controlled via MIDI-USB pedalboard. I can control several parameters and program changes, following Rackarrack's default MIDI chart, and one more thing I'd love to add as a functionality is, as I said on previous mails, to stay in a certain program and have 2/3 presets for each individual effect (i.e. Echo1/2/3) so it's a multi-pedalboard, and not having to change betweens programs (previously having to configure and save each one) just to modify one of the individual effect. Thanks as always for all the great work. -- Carlos sanchiavedraz * Musix GNU+Linux http://www.musix.es |

Oh, i indeed forgot to check local settings. And it appears that it's the key to all problems. I did some experiments and got following results: - repository package (0.6.1) doesn't work by itself - git version works on second launch - after that, any version works (0.6.1 says "can not load this bank" on each launch and draws bank windows with blue, but that seems to be due to rakarrack Bank Filename:/usr/local/share/rakarrack/Default.rkrb option). Attached configs are generated by these versions (old 0.6.1 from repos and built from git). Actually, i got very weird behavior. First, i thought that it started working because of compiling with --enable-optimizations=no option because that was the moment it began to work. However, i tried installing with different options and even debian binary (which wasn't working initially) and they all work now. I can try later on another setup, maybe it will appear again. Also read PACKAGERS.README. There are other optimizations that are platform dependent. It seems that some of the "magic" choices when --enable-optimizations=yes are not necessarily complete checks, since the script must be enabling certain options on hardware that either does not completely support the options. Particularly, try --enable-vectorize=no That option maybe is the problem for some CPU's. It does not appear to be validated in the configure script, only whether or not the user enabled/disabled it. The default appears to be yes. Try these options: ./configure --enable-optimizations=no --enable-vectorize=no --enable-sse2=yes (sse2 option with either sse or sse2, whichever is appropriate). See if the problem goes away with disabling vectorize, then I will know which compiler option causes the problem, and perhaps there can be some better checks put in place to prevent this from being enabled on hardware that does not support it. Then a note in PACKAGERS.README to warn about it. Hello, I've just encountered the same problem and solved it by compiling with --enable-optimizations=no option. That included disabling sse2 which however should be supported on my computer. So either this option disables something else as well (and not showing it in Optimizations table later) or sse2 'engine' doesn't always work correct. I hope this will be helpful if you still have this problem or anybody else searching like i was doing before... > Hello, > > This is my first post to the list, I'm here because I'm having the exact same > problem. Hello, This is my first post to the list, I'm here because I'm having the exact same problem. FX like chorus, delay and such work fine, but nothing with distortion, as soon as I enable distortion or overdrive, the output goes null. So all the presets that involve them doesn't work. I also noticed a glitch on the GUI, in the input/output levels (more to the output) but this is probably unrelated. Unfortunately for me, compiling from git didn't fix the problem. My OS is slackware 14, 64 bits, there are not pre-build packages, so this has been tested with the official 0.6.1 tarball as well as git's head. However, 0.3.0 works perfectly. My cpu supports sse and sse2 and I can see that at the end of configure's script sse2 seems to be used. Please let me know what else can I provide to help debugging this. Best Regards -- Paco |

Hi Everyone, I'd like to throw in great job on the 3 banks of presets and on Rakarrack itself! For a song I'm recording right now I'm using EchoPhase for the main guitar part, and then I used Spandex for one of the lead parts. I'm combining that with drums in Hydrogen, and recording in Ardour (and of course JACK). When I was having the problems with distortion, I decided to give Garage Band a try and I really didn't like it compared to the 3 apps mentioned above. It could be that I'm used to Linux (I also have been using MythTV for 3-4 years) or maybe the banks in Rakarrack just suit my needs by themselves, but so far great job! Tim |

Hi Ryan, If it helps, I was getting the same problem using the pre-compiled binary in VirtualBox on a Macbook Pro 5,2 using OS X lion. I had tried it with Ubuntu Studio 12.04 and 12.10 (in VB) and distortion didn't work on either of those. I also tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10, thinking it was a problem with the low-latency kernel in Ubuntu Studio, and then just installing Rakarrack (apt-get install rakarrack - it took care of installing all dependencies including JACK) and distortion didn't work. In call cases the result was the same: no errors, all other effects seem to work (at least the ones I tried) but distortion didn't. It didn't seem to matter what settings I had in VB or which version of VB I was using. I tried a single CPU, both CPUs, up to 4GB of RAM and no difference. I'm guessing if you tried Ubuntu Studio (or just Ubuntu) in VB, you could reproduce the problem on your machine. I will try VB on my Macbook again if I have time and let you know. Thanks again for your help! Tim On 11/29/12 9:26 PM, Ryan Billing wrote: > For git, you just need to install fftw3 library. Ok, I can confirm that compiling it myself *did* fix the problem. I was
able to compile straight from git though, I got an error on configure.
I'll post that later. I was able to compile the most recent release that
you can download from website. So thanks for your help!
Here's the error I got when I tried to compile what I downloaded from git:

Have you tried rakarrack from the official repository using the package
manager?
Something that will help determine whether the problem is something to do
with the compilation vs your hardware is if you compile it on your own
machine.
I can't think why distortion would not work, but the other FX would work?
Is this the case, or do none of the FX work?
If you would be so kind as to compile it on your own hardware, I can help
you through the process (if you need help). It is not very hard, even if
you have never done it before. If you are experienced with compiling
sources, then I suggest building rakarrack from the current development
(git). Either way, it would be good to find out the results of building
0.6.1 on your own machine so we can learn what causes the problem.

I looked at the build log again, and nothing stands out. There was only one warning about casting pointer to integer of a different size within the GUI code (rakarrack.cxx). The rest were unused variables...this does make me wonder if the version of GCC you are using is optimizing some important things out of the code. If we don't get any more definite ideas, you may change some of GCC flags to reduce the amount of optimization it is doing. Does a pre-built binary package of rakarrack work properly? If so this may indicate that compiling with a different gcc version may do the trick. I think I need more details about the problem. What do you mean by "distorted"? It is hard to imagine, for example, that the Chorus works but the "Distortion" does not. If you mean it does not have any effect on your guitar sound then it is probably because of one of the following: 1)Your sound card mixer is mixing the input guitar signal directly to the output. If you close rakarrack and there is still guitar sound, then you have to find out how to make it stop doing that (alsamixer settings). 2) You did not activate Rakarrack with the FX On button. 3) You have not activated any of the FX. Your compilation log looks correct, and if Rakarrack starts, then the program compiled correctly. I am apt to think the problem has to do with how you have Rakarrack connected in Jack, and what your sound card settings are. Do you use a program like qjackctl, or patchage to make jack connections? If not, do you use the command-line tools? If you don't do anything to configure connections in Jack, then it is likely you have an unconfigured system using default settings that is do not route audio into and out of Rakarrack as you might expect. It would be helpful to know what sound card you have, whether you have 64-bit or 32-bit processor, processor speed, number of cores/cpu's etc. I hope that gives you some things to try. If my ideas 1,2,3 don't help, then you can reply with more specific information about the problem and I will try to help find out why it does not work :) Best Regards, Ryan On 08/15/2012 02:51 PM, Ignas Anikevicius wrote: > Hello, > > I am using Arch Linux and I tried compiling rakarrack, but I couldn't > get any distorted sounds after installing it. > > The compilation log can be found at pastebin.[1] > > Please let me know if you need any details about my system. > > Thanks, > > Ignas A. > > [1] - http://pastebin.com/kcHZSdkc > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Live Security Virtual Conference > Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and > threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. Hello, I am using Arch Linux and I tried compiling rakarrack, but I couldn't get any distorted sounds after installing it. The compilation log can be found at pastebin.[1] Please let me know if you need any details about my system. Thanks, Ignas A. [1] - http://pastebin.com/kcHZSdkc |

Ah, ok. You're right. When I tried I saw "Multi" instead of "Harmonizer", so I thought it was the overall FX on/off. So then maybe I can use this meanwhile. The thing is it works for me on my Behringer FCB1010 so I really need to take the time to try what you were doing on 0.6.1 and see why it is different for me. Take care and standby for more when I have had time to try it. Then I can report what works and how it works.
