Mein Laptop mit #Windows hat soeben knapp eine Fantastilliarde an Updates eingespielt und musste 5x rebootet werden. Ich hoffe der hat jetzt megageile neue Features bekommen und kann die Wohnung aufräumen, Wäsche waschen und Mondraketen fernsteuern und so.
Und für die, die gleich wieder krähen, dass #Linux ja viel toller sei: das ist ein Dienstrechner, ich habe keinen Einfluss auf das zu nutzende OS.

Anyone else find it highly amusing that Microsoft now feels the need to start an emergency program to improve Windows' performance to counter the fact that Windows games run better under SteamOS (which is Linux + Wine / Proton) than they do on Windows?
Es gibt viele OpenSource-Programme, die das Leben leichter machen, das größte Hindernis sitzt unwissend – wie fast immer – direkt vor dem Bildschirm.
Das ist nicht weiter dramatisch, zu sehr wurden wir konditioniert alles wegzuklicken, und wenn was gesucht wird, dann albert gerne Windows mit ein paar windigen Vorschlägen herum, die schlecht und nicht ganz passend oder teuer sind – oder beides. Auf dem Mac sieht es besser aus, aber auch hier ist der Griff ins Portemonnaie nicht selten. Über Linux wollen wir gar nicht erst reden.
Aber: Es gibt fast alle großen und kleinen Programme und hilfreiche Tools für Windows, Mac und Linux. Der entscheidende Vorteil sich damit zu beschäftigen liegt darin, dass ich – wenn ich den Weg gefunden habe – das Betriebssystem wechseln kann und meine liebgewonnenen Helfer mit umziehen.
Das wäre eine Aufgabe:
In loser Reihenfolge Programme und Projekte vorzustellen, die Schranken niederreißen und neue Ausblicke schaffen, die Zukunft digital selbst gestalten, um frei zu sein.
Zugegeben, das wird nie ganz gelingen und manchmal ist ein wenig Umgewöhnung oder Einarbeitung notwendig – aber das ist weder gefährlich noch nervenaufreibend,
Bleibt die Frage, ob der extradienst die geeignete Plattform für ein solches Experiment ist.
Um das herauszufinden wäre eine Umfrage hilfreich. Wer es begrüßt, der muss gar nichts tun, das ist einfach und kostet keine Zeit. Wer Bedenken hat, der sollte die Chance nutzen und es in den Kommentaren vermerken. Wer jedoch von der Idee begeistert ist, kann es auch schreiben, diese Wortmeldungen schlagen wir der schweigenden Mehrheit zu.
Gut, es gibt jetzt die Logiker, die diese Art von Demokratie bedenklich finden. Na und?

My son has Windows 10 on his gaming rig and refuses to go to Windows 11. He wants me to help him get up to speed with Linux on this machine.
He's "just a user" in every stereotypical sense of the computer term so needs help for now. He's away from home for work for five days of the week so I'm hoping I can off-load a lot of the fiddly setup stuff for him.
I'm trying out CachyOS in a VM. The installer looks pretty slick.
I noticed it offers btrfs by default [ ☹️ ] but has zfs as an option [ 😍 ] so let's try that to start. Choosing KDE desktop.
In spite of being a fairly thick 2.8GB install ISO it still seems to download a lot over the wire at install time. Kinda sux on my small, metered, Internet connection.
Would've thought more would be on the media, or get to a first boot scenario before downloading a lot of files. What if install fails after downloading all that stuff over a metered connection?
Installer sits at 19% for a very long time with nothing indicating activity. Looking at the router is showing the traffic.
I'm hoping the rolling release nature of the distro is more "curated" than vanilla Arch.
Signal is working on a standalone version for Signal Desktop that does not require a mobile phone 🤩
Also more adjustable options when using Desktop as a linked device

I have read some reports that point out Microsoft is trying to fix Windows 11 and gain user trust. But I just want to say, at this point there probably is no ethical use of Windows.
(well, except if you're a gamer, in which case you're free to use windows as a gaming system or if you're forced to use windows at work)

Ha! Hab nun einen Weg gefunden mit mehreren via Internet mit LibreOffice gemeinsam an einer Datei zu arbeiten 🙂. Es ist ein kleiner Umweg (eigentlich aber auch nicht), ich hab uns allen (Windows & Linux-Nutzer) ein SSH/SFTP Netzlaufwerk von meinem Server erstellt und in den Systemen eingehängt. Nun kann man quasi die Datei bei sich "lokal" in dem Netzlaufwerk speichern & laden was jedoch auf dem Server ist 🙂.

Ich bin eigentlich ganz gut mit Computern, aber irgendwas stimmt gerade bei mir gar nicht. Erst schießt sich Windows ab, dann macht mein Linux ein Update auf 26.04 (wobei Grafik und Netzwerk sterben) und überhaupt.
Und ich hab 5% Paketverlust wenn ich nach "draussen pinge". Hier im Haus, alles easy, keine Latenz. zu Entega? alles nicht gut.
Hab ich Gremlins?
Ich habe meine Strohwitwenschaft genutzt und auf dem Uralt-Laptop des Mannes Linux Mint installiert.
Unfassbar wie schnell die alte Kiste jetzt ist.
Nun muß ich es nur noch schaffen mein Firefox-Profil auf dem Ding zum Laufen zu kriegen, dann bin ich stolz und zufrieden.

Eu esqueci completamente que a CLI do #Windows trata aspas de forma diferente do #bash e fiquei um tempo para descobrir porque uma "mesma" requisição recebia respostas diferentes baseadas no SO em que usei o curl.
