it is a bit ironical to recommend , a centralized American service that runs on , and services and depends heavily on them spending millions each year just to pay to Amazon and then in an context recommend that as "digital independence"

Some people say it is a compromise, but the bar is way too low if you recommend Signal at the “digital independence day”. At this point It's about selling a feeling instead of actual accomplishment

Well, this really sucks, for a variety of reasons. Amazon is ending support for all of its Kindle ebook readers released before 2012. Yeah, that's old, but they're simple devices, and I've got several that still work fine. Even if the batteries die, they're relatively easy to replace (unlike a lot of newer devices). Now they're locked down and basically e-waste.

Amazon are killing off their old Kindles - notably the ones which still let you remove DRM from their ebooks.
I suspect that it is also because they can't connect to modern TLS servers.
A shame, although I was only using it for stripping DRM.
There are a few jailbreaks but the hardware and software is ancient, so I might have to repurpose mine as yet another semi-passive display.

          Dear Customer,

Thank you for being a longtime Kindle customer. We're glad our devices have served you well for as long as they have. Starting May 20, 2026 — 14 to 18 years after their initial launches — we are discontinuing support for Kindle devices released in 2012 or earlier. Here's what this means for you:

* You can continue to read books already downloaded on these devices, but you will not be able to purchase, borrow, or download additional books on them after that date.
* If you deregister or factory reset these devices, you will not be able to re-register or use these devices in any way.

Affected devices include Kindle 1st and 2nd Generation, Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation.

To minimize any disruption, we're offering a promotional code for 20% off

SRAM. Static RAM. The stuff used for CPU caches, including AMD's 3D chips.

There have been mumbles of CPU prices spiking like DRAM....this may be part of why.

"Companies like Cerebras, Groq, and d-Matrix are designing AI inference chips that use massive amounts of on-chip SRAM instead of relying on external DRAM (HBM), which significantly reduces latency and power consumption."

nVidia bought Groq. Amazon and Cerebras just signed a deal. Cerebras’ WSE-3 chip includes 900,000 cores and 44 gigabytes of on-chip SRAM.
