To follow up on yesterday's announcement of fediverse, the 'federate your RSS feed' project, today I've pushed support for mapping RSS categories to ActivityPub hashtags. This does add a new required config field, as each ActivityPub server can map hashtags to different places.
That's... about it, really. This is mostly a blog post so that there is a blog post with hashtags to point at.

We've had solar for nearly 3 years now, but our easterly exposure has been niggling at me: output starts waning around lunch so the afternoon feels wasted (particularly after a cloudy morning)

What the ... ?! The hacker-news "hug of death" today was crazy! 🤯
One of the lighter articles on my blog (https://blog.hofstede.it/shell-tricks-that-actually-make-life-easier-and-save-your-sanity/) made it to the HN start page and generated 8000 requests within 6 hours.
My webserver did easil tolerate that (static site generator ftw!) but Grafana Loki choked on the webserver log, crashing parts of my monitoring infrastructure (needed a limit increase) ..
Amazong to see that people seem to enjoy that content 🙂

Qual a duração média dos blogs? Usando o intervalo entre a primeira e a última postagem, podemos descobrir o tempo que cada blog passou em atividade.
O valor mais comum é (como esperado, eu acho) zero meses! Isso significa que muitos blogs fazem uma única postagem e nunca mais.
Mas me surpreendeu que, analisando intervalos maiores, muitos blogs ficam longos períodos em atividade:
- 1992 blogs tiveram uma única postagem (0 meses de atividade)
- 8568 blogs ficaram em atividade de 1 mês até 1 ano
- 6651 blogs ficaram em atividade de 1 a 3 anos
- 2657 blogs de 3 a 5 anos
- 2019 blogs de 5 a 10 anos
- 406 (!!) blogs estão em atividade a mais de 10 anos

I self-host a lot of stuff. Nearly everything that I use. FOSS and self-hosting is a massive part of my computing experience.
I love reading about people enjoying / exploring self-hosting stuff.
I struggle when people advocate "just self-host it", without giving due consideration to the costs, risks, security considerations, and so on.
