Drew DeVault has started a fork of Vim 8.2 he calls "classic": drewdevault.com/2026/03/25/202

The goal as I understand it is both to avoid AI slop, but also some newer features that may still be young enough to require active maintenance. He's expressed the intent to keep up with security issues and bugfixes, but otherwise avoid new features.

It could be a good option depending on how much you use post-8.2 functionality.

Indian Railways - Always A Great Adventure

        (Details In The Alt Text)

        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matheran

This is an old black and white, scanned photo in portrait format of the side of an small rural, Indian Railways narrow-gauge train with numerous people hanging onto the sides of the carriages. Matheran Hill Railway (1989).

On the left side of the photo the train stretches away from the camera and curves gently to the right and its the right side of the train in view. Close to the lens is a vertical, white handrail with the back of a person hanging onto to the side of the train in front of the hand rail. The camera is held out of the train about half a metre and the sides of the few carriages are just visible as are perhaps five or ten more hangers-on. At the front of the train is a small diesel locomotive with a wisp of dark smoke above the engine as it labours hauling the train up the hill. A short distance of the narrow track can be seen ahead of the engine before the rails vanish behind a curve to the right. At the right side of the track is a steep slope about two metres tall covered with patchy dry grass. In the distance, ahead of the train are a few rolling hills with a clear and cloudless sky above.

This is the Matheran Hill Railway, opened in 1907 and covers 21km from Neral to the Matheran, a hill station in the Western Ghats.

Does anyone have any links, podcasts, video, especially writing on deeply examining /LLMs in non copyright spaces? Like, as an example, I’m in the fan fiction community a lot. Yes, of course there are loads of people that will happily generate slop in those/these spaces, but it seems to never be willingly promoted by readers. If it is promoted, it’s purely accidental and or the output was so heavily edited that it transformed into human writing again. This could be purely personal experience but in my case, I find that it really is not a big thing in those spaces. In short, everyone gives it the middle finger by not even acknowledging its existence in those spaces. Not a head in the sand kind of way but just a collective discussing great work instead. The AI evangelist seem to be very bored of these kinds of spaces and I’m trying to figure out if it’s personal experience or not

I was using the Python csv library for a script but decided I should dig into the pandas DataFrame stuff instead.

It was more complex, and it took me awhile to figure things out, and I had to read a bunch of web pages explaining things.

But in the end, I am 100% happy I did it that way.

I did not want to ask some AI/LLM for the answers, or to write the code for me.

Because for me, the struggle and the journey is part of creating something worthwhile.

It’s spring time here, so I’m revisiting phyllotaxis spiral patterns which are visible in some plants as they grow.

Yesterday my VPS set off a warning, as it was hit by a huge spike in incoming traffic, peaking at 55GB at 2:15pm and lasting for an hour.

Upon investigating, it turns out it was my PeerTube instance that was targeted.

Where did the traffic come from?

There may be various useful things from this tech, but the net version of things with it being forced upon society right now in this hype wave is that everything is getting much worse, and sickeningly so.

Several more pieces need to be added to the puzzle to make "AI" tech more useful, and I'm also simply opposed to a direction in society that dismisses and devalues creative endeavors, which a lot of this hype is putting at the center of itself. Creativity is what makes life largely worthwhile. I'm not willing to give that up.

I have no problem with OpenImageDenoiser in Blender, which speeds up renders through machine learning, and in no way devalues creativity. But something which made it so I just typed a few words into Blender and it did all my artwork for me, I would oppose.

Watching a YouTube video that seems like it was definitely NOT written by AI, or edited or otherwise made by AI, etc.… except that the voiceover sounds like it. It's very informative; the script itself had to have been written by a human.

Are we getting to the point now, where people will do all of the work themselves, and then let the AI voiceover say it all for them? If so, why; so that no one can then use AI to clone their voice?

I find it sad if that is actually the reason, but I also get it. It's something I've thought about myself, although the idea that gave me was to use multiple voice changers; same problem, though. It's sad that that's a perfectly reasonable thing to consider at this point, I think.
