snac.lab8.cz is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Something that I'd love to be able to do, but haven't figured out how, yet:
You can run somecommand 2>&1 > log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR together, but you won't know which is which.
You can run somecommand 2>err.txt >log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR separate, but you won't know the timing, or which error messages happened between which STDOUT messages.
I'd like to figure out some way to combine both, so you end up with a file like this:
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
2: this was a STDERR message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
2: this was a STDERR message
Any ideas? @mirabilos?
I refuse to believe that RAM prices up 400% in a quarter is some market fluctuation. This is a supply-chain heist.
Every bit of hate directed at AI companies is justified and possibly, milder than it should be. It ought to be 100x more.
Every extra dollar you spend on a simple DDR5 kit is a direct subsidy for a tech-bubble. So a bunch of crybabies sitting in silicon valley can push out a hallucinating machine, scam some more VCs, help create the biggest unemployment hysteria in modern history, give multi-millionaire CEOs an excuse to lay off hard-working employees?
Burn it all down.

I wrote a book on Linux Memory Management, published by @nostarch - it's a comprehensive 1300 page exploration of Linux 6.0's memory management code, depth-first, diving into the code and REALLY explaining how things work.
The idea is to avoid hand waving as much as possible and literally explore what the kernel _actually_ does.
It's full of diagrams and careful explanations of logic including a ton of stuff you just can't find anywhere else.
It's currently available in its entirety in draft form via early access when you pre-order.
It's available at https://nostarch.com/linux-memory-manager
:)
#Linux became #slopware. The best #GNU/Linux distro still depends on #AI
slop. #Hurd is not ready yet. #Hyperbola #BSD needs support in order to
fully properly switch from a #GNU/Linux OS to a GNU? #BSD one.
Depressing times, but maybe enlightening ones too. Linux since 1996 was
just a corporate workauround to drive commercial Unix tools on it.
In the end #IBM won. My tip for the #GN[U] develoepers for #GUIX:
consider Unix dead. Don't try to resurrect it. It's finished, rotten,
bloated, propietarized, outdated. Ironically the licensed GPLv2 kernel
with less blobs than Linux came from AT&T and it's Unix 2.0.
They already did Unix better than Unix itself. Either you focus and enhance
#Hurd, or lose against the blobslop OS. Make an outstanding FS on Hurd.
Give more rights to the user than the shitty layers of #dbus/#polkit and the
like to fix the lack of proper namespaces on Linux.
I said 'proper', Plan9/9front it's light years ahead.
Don't get just 'well enough' with X11/wayland. You can do better stuff.
Ditto with Emacs, forget coreutils, reimplement everything you
can with jitted Elisp and Elisp code replacing these outdated Unix
tools. Eshell can be a better shell. The 9front folks already did it
with 'rc' simplyfing Unxi shells to the extreme.
After using #OpenBSD for a while I got used to finding ALL answers in MAN pages. #Linux has them since forever, but man pages on OpenBSD are on another level.
So yesterday I installed Arch Linux to remind myself on overall feel of that OS and I noticed that it doesn't have man command (archinstall with a desktop preset).
I am aware that everything is optional on Arch Linux, but having man pages optional feels rather weird after using OpenBSD.
I was the kid in 1998 giving a speech in one of my classes about the Halloween Documents and how Microsoft was evil and #Linux and #opensource were the future. I was a shit student outside of that, mostly because I was up till 4am most nights hacking away at Linux and learning how to compile shit and chat with developers.

Hoping someone out there can help me understand what's happening with Signal and its desktop implementations. Trying it out on phone with my partner as we de-bigtech and the reviews on flathub are brutal. But also from a while back. 1. Is plaintext passwords on desktop still the issue, 2. Are there workarounds? 3. How bad is the issue at all? For our personal stuff fine to stay on phone, but there's a big picture plan to move some professional work off WhatsApp to signal. #linux #fedora #signal

@fedops @ParadeGrotesque I hadn't heard about the French gov mandating Linux workstations for all their Ministries, that's great news!
The Dutch, French and German workspace teams were already working together on a Linux OS within the EDIC's 100 day challenges, but I don't think a choice for a distro has been made yet. 🇪🇺
I'm super impressed with how proactive the French are. Good work @numerique_gouv 👏
“With a bit of curiosity and a willingness to step outside the Windows-only mindset, communities can stretch their resources, reduce e-waste, and empower people with technology that’s stable, secure, and genuinely enjoyable to use.” Nice reporting that reminds me of @laptoprevive #endof10 #linux

I almost have stock Debian 13 booting on this DragonBoard 410c with U-Boot, firmware is the issue. I would like to revisit PostmarketOS on it too. It's a really interesting little board - the worst thing about it is the size of the RAM. I can work within that though. I need to figure out how to add more packages to Postmarket OS though.
I recently switched to #Linux Mint. I mean, the reasons are obvious so I will save that for a different time. What really struck me was just how easy it was to actually do it. Problems were minor and mainly due to the fact that I have an Nvidia card in my laptop.
Aside from that, I was up and running quickly. Apps I wanted, (including Steam,) were easy to find and install. There were a couple apps that I needed to find replacements for, like Notepad++.
Yesterday, I deleted my #Windows drive.
Endlich #Linux🐧auf dem offiziellen Dienstlaptop 💻. Bin einer der ersten in der Landesverwaltung #SchleswigHolstein, die den "+1 Linux Arbeitsplatz" ausprobieren dürfen. 😀

I do love it when people find, and favourite/boost, my posts from years ago. For some reason my post from 2019 about the "ultimate cheat sheet" suddenly got some love.
As far as I can tell, the cheat sheet has been continuously updated, and is still relevant.
Check it out!

FWIW you can be absolutely sure there is no way the US public, gov and mil sectors would ever allow the use of non-US proprietary OS's.
We've all just normalised US tech dependency. Tireless pressure gangs of lobbyists on insane carbon miles have helped of course.

hey so this is probably completely pointless but: looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years expereince administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. No prior job experience unfortunately, all those 15 years were mostly personal projects and small-scale stuff for friends. Microsoft Office is one of the largest #welfare programs in the world. it diverts REAL billions of dollars from the public coffers of governments, into the pockets of Bill Gates and his #EpsteinClass cronies.
Brasil pays for basic universal health care and UBI for kids because it said NO to Microsoft in 2005 & moved to #linux & #LibreOffice.
thanks to Trump, #Microsoft finally lost the 2nd largest economy in the European Union and the 7th largest in the world.

Well today I learned a little something about #redhat and "compressing the kill cycle"
F4GRX Sébastien boostedRE: https://wikis.world/@legoktm/116365775366782119
Incredible, someone at Red Hat is apparently reading my toots and slowly scrubbing their website of references to their "compressing the kill cycle" project.
Here's the file they don't want you to read: https://web.archive.org/web/20260402155236/https://www.redhat.com/rhdc/managed-files/ve-compress-the-kill-cycle-detail-693397pr-202402-en_3.pdf
p.s. if you work at Red Hat and have inside info on what's going on, my Signal is "@legoktm.12345" - happy to protect you.
Aral Balkan boostedRE: https://hachyderm.io/@nathandyer/116353464692290660
Red Hat has since removed their war crime-supporting "Compress the kill cycle" marketing page from their website but left other references up, e.g. https://www.redhat.com/rhdc/managed-files/ve-compress-the-kill-cycle-detail-693397pr-202402-en_3.pdf (also saved on IA now)
A really good summary of what compressing the kill cycle means in practical terms was recently published in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2026/mar/26/ai-got-the-blame-for-the-iran-school-bombing-the-truth-is-far-more-worrying
@swick @decathorpe I'm afraid I don't, but https://www.redhat.com/rhdc/managed-files/ve-compress-the-kill-cycle-detail-693397pr-202402-en_3.pdf is still up (and @legoktm saved it on IA just in case it "disappears" too)

Help me find a new ereader! Can you recommend one?
I've have had a #Kobo Forma for five years - its the perfect #ereader.
Why I love it?
1) 8.0” display, 1440 × 1920 resolution
2) Works flawlessly with linux #Calibre - easily manage my books. Never connect to wifi as there is no need.
3) Can invert display to white txt/black background; at night my wife can sleep. I DO NOT want a color display.
4) battery life is incredible.

https://github.com/feoh/linkdqueue
It's a client for Linkding - https://github.com/sissbruecker/linkding
A sincerely amazing self hosted tool that lets you save web links to your library indexed by tags.
The app runs on #linux, #windows, #mac and on mobile as well (tested on IOS) but I haven't had the intestinal fortitude to submit it to the app stores so you'll have to build it yourself for those platforms.
In addition to letting your browse tagged articles by tag, it also shows your "to read" queue - articles tagged with "toread".
Please let me know if you like it. Feel free to file issues if you want new features etc.
Thanks for listening!
