I thought that these reviews complaining about crashing are just some outliers, but oh boy, I can't seem to get through a cutscene without the game crashing. I followed the dev advice and checked my drivers and files and nothting helps. Not cool.

**Assassin’s Creed Shadows** is the Japan game the series spent nearly twenty years circling, and it is better than the pre-launch noise suggested. It is also still an Assassin’s Creed game: huge, pretty, occasionally bloated, and more interested in letting you live in a place than in reinventing itself. A year and a half after launch, with the *Claws of Awaji* expansion and a final story update already out, that verdict has held.

Critics landed around an 81 on OpenCritic and Metacritic — generally favorable, not a revolution. Steam sits at “Mostly Positive,” roughly 75%. Metacritic’s user score is lower and messier, which tells you as much about the pre-release culture war as it does about the game.

## Two fantasies, one map

You play as **Naoe**, a young Iga shinobi whose life is wrecked by the invasion of her home, and **Yasuke**, the African retainer who served Oda Nobunaga and is one of the few Black figures with a documented foothold in Sengoku Japan. They share a campaign against the Shinbakufu, a masked conspiracy sitting on top of the usual Assassin–Templar scaffolding. The pairing is the whole design.

Naoe is the reason to play. She is fast, light, and built around tools: grappling hook, prone crawling through darkness, kunai, kusarigama, tanto, and a Hidden Blade that finally feels like the point again. Castles become puzzles. Weather matters. A frozen pond in winter is a walkway; the same pond in spring is cover. A storm covers her footsteps. She is the closest the RPG-era games have come to the old “ghost through a fortress” fantasy.




Yasuke is the opposite instrument. He kicks doors off hinges, swings a kanabo or naginata through groups, and absorbs hits Naoe cannot. His parkour is clumsy on purpose. Ropes snap under him. Viewpoints sometimes refuse him. That contrast is honest — two bodies, two ways through the same space — but it is not balanced. Most of the map, most of the castles, and most of the fun belong to Naoe. Yasuke is excellent when the story wants a siege. He is a passenger when you just want to move.




That imbalance is the game’s most interesting design choice and its most common complaint. Switching is menu-bound rather than fluid. You will default to Naoe. The game knows it.

## Japan that actually changes

The map is central Honshu in the late 16th century: castle towns, ports, shrines, rice fields, and mountains that look painted rather than generated. The Anvil engine’s weather is the star. Seasons rotate. Snow buries roofs. Autumn turns the hills into fire. Spring puts petals in the air. Summer is loud with insects. It is not a cosmetic slider. Visibility, sound, paths, and even some infiltration routes shift with the calendar. After a decade of open worlds stuck in one postcard season, this is the feature that still feels generous.




The map is also quieter than *Valhalla* or *Odyssey*. Icons are thinner. Scouts replace some of the old “run to the glowing question mark” loop: you send them out, they narrow a search zone, they come back at the end of a season with materials. It is still a Ubisoft loop. It is a less noisy one.

Castles are the best set pieces the series has had in years — dense, vertical, and worth clearing without a checklist. Naoe on a tiled roof at dusk, looking down into a courtyard she has already mapped in her head, is the fantasy people asked for.




The hideout, a customizable compound in a valley, is the settlement idea from *Valhalla* given a layout you can actually fuss over: forge, dojo, study, scouts, decorations, even animals. Some players live in it. Others treat it as a menu with a nice loading screen. Both readings are fair.

## Story: sharp at the edges, soft in the middle

Naoe’s opening is personal and ugly in a way the series often promises and rarely delivers. Yasuke’s chapters give him interiority instead of treating him as a walking spectacle. Together they are better company than most recent Creed leads. The mid-game, though, stretches into the familiar “clear the next masked villain in the next region” structure, and the conspiracy does not always earn the hours it asks for. The last act tightens again. Side characters in the League are useful in combat and thin as people. Romance exists; it is not the point.

How long you stay depends on appetite. Main story is around 35–40 hours. Story plus sides sits closer to 65. Completionists can push past 100. That is a lot of Japan. It is also a lot of the same castle, slightly rearranged.

## The argument that arrived before the game

Yasuke’s presence produced a months-long fight about “historical accuracy” that mostly ignored how Assassin’s Creed has always worked: real names, invented plots, Isu science fiction, and a franchise that put a hidden blade on Ezio and a club in Eivor’s hands. Historians disagree on the exact status of Yasuke’s rank; they do not disagree that he existed, served Nobunaga, and was given a stipend, a house, and a sword. Ubisoft’s own line was the honest one: this is historical fiction, not a textbook.

Play the game and the controversy shrinks. Yasuke is written as a man out of place who has made a place anyway. Naoe is the Japanese protagonist the setting demanded. The world is researched enough to feel lived-in and loose enough to let you assassinate a daimyo’s inner circle for a magic box. If your test for a Creed game is documentary purity, none of them pass. If your test is whether feudal Japan feels like a place you want to walk through for a week, *Shadows* passes easily.

User scores split along that pre-release line. Platform scores from people who bought the game were stronger at launch than Metacritic’s mixed user average, which absorbed a lot of one-star reviews that read like press releases from 2024.

## What still creaks

The RPG layer is trimmed compared with *Odyssey* and *Valhalla*, which is good, but loot and mastery points still accumulate faster than they mean anything. The dual-character system is conceptually rich and practically a little awkward. Some side activities exist because the map had space. Performance at launch was decent for a game this size; later patches and the Switch 2 port (December 2025) widened the audience without changing the core. The June 2026 final update tied a bow on the story and added a *Black Flag* crossover beat for the people who still care about the Animus frame. You do not need it to judge the game.

It will not convert someone who bounced off the last three open-world Creeds. It is the best-executed version of that style, not a different style.

## Who should play it

Play it if you wanted Japan, stealth that asks you to think, and a world that looks different in January than it does in June. Play Naoe first and often. Use Yasuke when a gate needs to come down. Skip the collectibles you do not feel.

Skip it if you wanted a short, social-stealth Creed in the *Mirage* mold, or if you need the two protagonists to feel equally essential every hour. They do not.

*Shadows* is not the best game of 2025. It is one of the best *Assassin’s Creed* games of the last decade: a setting the series finally earned, a shinobi who moves like the fantasy promised, a samurai who hits like a siege engine, and a country that changes while you watch. That is enough.

**8 / 10 — buy it if feudal Japan is the itch. Stay for Naoe. Visit Yasuke when you want the door off its hinges.**

I was absolutely enjoying this game as I am just a casual gamer. I have had it since launch and had logged over 60 hours of gameplay, just taking my time, enjoying the imagery and time period reflected in the game. But after an update the game has been unplayable and fails to load due to a Dx12 error that I have not been able to get a fix for after contacting both Ubisoft and Nvidia about the issue and attempting many, many online workarounds that have been posted.

The game is good, fun and full of content and will eat up a ton of hours. But buyer beware. If (and most likely, when) the Dx12 error happens. Your time with this game will be over. I have had this problem for over 8 months now.
