You can just click on a relic to look at its tier. Should say so right above the image, below the name. In this close up view, the border is also similarly colored, f.e. boss relics have a red border.
Other than entering the compendium (annoying mid run) there is no easy way to know a relics rarity. This can cause me to reload/not make a choice to avoid giving up a key relic.
