Card types
Cards in Trello can represent a near infinite amount of things. From tasks to goals, all the way to recipes and ingredients, there's really no limit to what they can be used for. Trello's specialized card types have distinct attributes and their design is different from that of a default card.

Template cards
Template cards can be used for content that will be repeated or copied frequently, such as a recurring task that must be done each week.
Creating and using template cards can be found in our doc here: Creating Template Cards
Board cards
The board menu and home page are fast ways to navigate across lots of boards. Sometimes context is more important, so a link to a specific or related board is listed in a card. While valuable, those might not be easily visible if they are in a card description, for instance. Board card types help make those more noticeable and easily accessible. A board card is a card that strictly acts as a visual preview and link to another board.
Creating Board cards
To create a board card, start by going to the board you want to use for the card, and copy it's URL from your browser's address bar. Go to the board where you want to place this card, and create a new card. For the card name, simply paste the link to the board and save it. The card will format as a preview of the board and be clickable to navigate to it directly.
Editing and deleting a Board card
As long as the card name holds the link to another board, it will continue to show as that board type. When a card is considered a board card, other visual additions to a card front will not be shown. For instance, a normal card would show if an attachment was added to it as a small paperclip icon. Board cards will only show the preview of the board.
To change a board card to a normal card, simply rename it to something other than the board URL. Alternatively you can right click the card and select "Convert to Normal Card". Archiving and deleting a board card is done in the same way as any other card type.
Separator cards
Sometimes it can be important to display a gap or space between cards while keeping them in the same list. This could be done using an image uploaded to a card as a cover or just a jumble of text as filler. However, Trello provides a native feature to create that visual distinction, which is known as a separator card.
Creating a Separator Card
The process to create a separator card is quick and easy. Add at least three hyphens to the name of a card and save it like you would with any normal card. The hyphens will convert to a solid grey line in the card.
Editing and deleting a Separator card
As long as the card name remains the same, it will continue to show as that separator type. When a card is considered a separator card, other visual additions to a card front will not be shown. For instance, a normal card would show if an attachment was added to it as a small paperclip icon. Separator cards will only show the gray line used to represent it.

Link cards
Link cards are automatically created when URLs from a variety of websites are added to a card's name. Rather than showing a simple link, they will show a small preview of the linked page directly on the card. More detail on Link cards can be found here: Link cards

Frequently asked questions
Will there be other cards types in the future?
Hopefully! We're always looking for new ideas, so please share your thoughts with us over at https://trello.com/contact.
Can I change what is shown on each of the different card types?
Not currently, separator and board cards will only show a grey dash or a preview of the board respectively. Link cards will format differently depending on the URL. You can convert specialized card types to a normal one through the quick edit menu (right clicking the front of the card).
