Use your voice assistant on your TV with Chromecast and Google TV Streamer

Browse YouTube and get updates on weather, sports, finance, and more on your TV with Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant voice commands and Chromecast.

If you enable Digital Wellbeing, Downtime, Filters or Do not disturb may restrict or block this feature.

What you need

Unsupported devices

  • Chromecast (1st gen)
  • TVs that work with Google Cast

Step 1: Set up your Google smart speaker or display and Google streaming device

Important: Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your Google streaming device and speaker or TV.

Step 2: Set your preferred TV

It's recommended that you choose a TV that will always play your video. That way, you won't have to include the TV's name in your voice command.

Speakers
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Home  and then All devices , then touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings Settings icon and then Audio.
    • To choose the TV or speaker you want to use when you play music, tap Default music speaker.
    • To choose your preferred TV, tap Default TV.

To reset your preferred device, tap Default speaker or Default TV and then Reset.

Displays
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Home  and then All devices , then touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings settings icon.
    • To choose the TV or speaker you want to use when you play music, tap Audio and then Default music speaker, then choose the TV or speaker you want to use when you play music.
    • To choose your preferred TV, tap Display and then Default TV, then choose your preferred TV.

To reset your preferred device, tap Default speaker or Default TV and then Reset.

Ways to use your voice assistant on your TV

Important: Gemini for Home voice assistant is only available on Google smart speakers and displays.

Tip: For Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer, press and hold the microphone button on the Voice Remote to activate Google Assistant. There’s no need to say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google.”
Browse YouTube content

You can ask your voice assistant to show certain content and weather on your TV. Simply click through the suggestions and choose your favorites.

You can search and browse non-personalized YouTube videos based on your request.

Available voice commands depend on the voice assistant you’re using:

  • Most simple voice commands are available for both Google Assistant and Gemini for Home voice assistant.
  • Many complex, natural-sounding voice commands are available only for Gemini for Home voice assistant.
To do this: Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:
Search or browse YouTube videos on your TV

"Show me <genre or creator of videos> videos"

You must say "Show me" before your request. To play the request, say "Hey Google, play <title>"

Gemini for Home voice assistant additional commands

Aside from the basic voice commands listed above, you can use your voice assistant to make multi-action or follow-up commands.

“Hey Google, play the latest video from <channel creator>.”

Important: You can only search or browse YouTube videos. You can’t search or browse videos from other providers, like Netflix or HBO.

Get visual responses to your questions

You can get visual responses to questions about weather, finance, sports, translations and calculations on your TV even when it’s turned off.

Available voice commands depend on the voice assistant you’re using:

  • Most simple voice commands are available for both Google Assistant and Gemini for Home voice assistant.
  • Many complex, natural-sounding voice commands are available only for Gemini for Home voice assistant.

This feature only works with TVs that support HDMI-CEC. Make sure CEC is enabled in your TV settings before you attempt to use this feature. When your TV is turned off, you must say "show" when you use your voice assistant to have your response appear on your TV.

Weather

To do this: Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:
Ask for the current weather

"What's the weather forecast for today?"

"Show me the weather on my TV"

This command will provide weather
information for your home address.

Ask for the current weather in a specific location

"What's the weather like in London?"

"Show me the weather in London on my TV"

Ask for the weather forecast for:

  • Tomorrow
  • A specific day
  • The next 1-5 days (choose between 1-5 days)

"What will the weather be for tomorrow?"

"Show me the weather for tomorrow on my TV"

"What will the weather be on Saturday?"

"Show me the weather for Saturday on my TV"

"What will the weather be for the next 3 days?"

"Show me the weather for the next 3 days on my TV"

Ask for the weather forecast in a certain location for:

  • Tomorrow
  • A specific day
  • The next 1-5 days (choose between 1-5 days)
