Share a Gem from Gemini Apps

You can share Gems from Gemini Apps for others to use and edit.

Important: To use this feature, you must be signed in to Gemini Apps. Learn how to sign in to Gemini Apps.

Share a Gem

Important: Any Gem instructions and files that you have uploaded to the Gem can be viewed by any user with access to the Gem. Any user with edit access to the Gem can also update and delelete the Gem. Learn more about Gem access levels.

Share with specific people

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. On the left, click Explore Gems .
  3. Next to the Gem that you want to share, click Share .
  4. Enter the email address you want to share with. If you use a work or school account, you can share with suggested recipients.
  5. Decide how people can use your Gem. Select one:
    • Viewer
    • Editor
  6. Optional steps:
    • If you would like to add an expiration date for the user’s access, click Add expiration.
    • In the text box, you can add a message that will be included in the notification email.
    • If you don’t want the recipient(s) to be notified, unselect Notify people.
  7. Click Send or Share.
    • If the Gem includes uploaded files, you’ll be asked to share access to the files.
    • If Notify people was selected, the recipient(s) will get an email with a link to the shared Gem.
Tips: 
Share access to files uploaded to the shared Gem

If you have uploaded files to the Gem, and you have permissions to share these files, you will be asked if you want to share the file(s) with the Gem. 

  1. Select the level of access you want to share to the file(s):
    • Viewer
    • Commenter
    • Editor
  2. Click Share.

If you have uploaded files to a Gem, don’t share the Gem with anyone who you don’t want to view the files.

Add an expiration date

To add an expiration date and time to your shared Gem:

  1. After you’ve entered the email address of the user you would like to share with, click on the user’s role and then Add expiration.
  2. Next to the expiration date and time, click Edit expiration .
  3. Select the date when access will expire for that person or group.
  4. Select the time when access will expire for that person or group.
  5. Click Done.
Transfer ownership of a Gem
Important: If you transfer ownership of a Gem, the new owner will have the ability to remove your access to the Gem.
 

You can transfer ownership of a Gem to another person who has access to the Gem. 

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. On the left, click Explore Gems .
  3. Next to the Gem that you want to share, click Share .
  4. Find the person who you want to transfer ownership to and click on the user’s role.
  5. Click Transfer ownership and then Yes.

Share a link

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. On the left, click Explore Gems .
  3. Next to the Gem that you want to share, click Share  and then Copy link . Then paste it where you want to share, like in a messaging app or an email draft.
Tip: For other users to access the Gem through the shared link, they need access to the Gem. You can give specific people access or you can change the general access of your Gem.

Sharing Gems with uploaded files
Gems with uploaded files can only be shared with device files or Google Drive files. If there are other file types uploaded in the Gem’s Knowledge section, you won’t be able to share the Gem.
Gem access levels
Important: Any user with edit access to a Gem can update or delete the Gem instructions and uploaded files. These changes may change Gemini’s response.
 
Users with this access level can:
Editor
  • Share the Gem with others
  • Make changes to the Gem instructions and uploaded files
  • Delete the Gem
Viewer
  • Use the shared Gem
  • View the Gem instructions and uploaded files
Change the general access for your Gem

You can allow broad access to your Gem. These options depend on if you’re signed in to a personal, work, or school Google Account.

  • Public: Anyone can search on Google and get access to your Gem, without signing in to their Google Account. If you use a Google Account through work or school, you may not find this option.
  • Anyone with the link: Anyone who has the link can use your Gem, without signing in to their Google Account. If you use a Google Account through work or school, you may not find this option.
  • Your organization: If you use a Google Account through work or school, anyone signed in to an account in your organization can open the Gem.
  • Private: Only people with access can open the Gem.

Work or school users: Sharing Gems outside of your organization

Gems sharing is controlled by your organization’s Drive sharing settings. Drive sharing settings are managed by your organization’s Workspace administrator. Learn more about how to manage Gem sharing.

Shared Gems are saved in your Google Drive

Shared Gems are saved in a new Drive folder. Any files uploaded as part of the Gem’s uploaded files are also saved in the Drive folder. 

If access to a Gem is removed for a user, the Gem will be removed from that user’s Google Drive.

To find the Gem file in Drive:

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. On the left, click Explore Gems .
  3. Next to the Gem that you want to find in Drive, click More  and then Locate in Drive .
Work or school users: Why can’t I share a Gem?

If you don’t find the Share  option, you may not be able to share the Gem. There are two common reasons why you can’t share a Gem:

  • The Gem includes a file type that’s not supported for sharing. Learn more about sharing Gems with uploaded files.
  • Your organization has disabled Gem sharing. Your Workspace administrator can turn Gem sharing on or off. Contact your administrator to learn more.
