Hurricane Season

I was driving the other day, listening to the coolest radio station I know, WXRT, and heard the revelation that is Trombone Shorty. I don't know what you call his music - super funk rock fusion, New Orleans style, maybe. What I do know is his song Hurricane Season had me bouncing and smiling in my car, in traffic, at a red light, which usually just pisses me off.

Well, I'm Trombone Shorty's newest, biggest fan. If you care to dance away the drudgery of the dishes or other mundane housework, click play on the video below, it's not bad for a live recording. (and lordy, the irony of norleans funk at a festival in Salt Lake City is rich) I've already downloaded the studio version of Hurricane Season from Amazon, the best 99 cents I've spent in a very long time.

If you want to smile, watch the short documentary at the end, and watch him talk about growing up in Louis Armstrong's neighborhood, marching in parades with neighborhood kids using boxes for drums and big wheels for pretend tubas. He says once we got real instruments, it was all over. He's been playing trombone since it was bigger than him, he plays a mean trumpet too, and he sings like Lenny Kravitz.

And since we're talking New Orleans funk, here's some Marc Broussard to keep you bouncing through the day. (Thanks Jane, for reminding me how much I love this song!) Marc raised a lot of money for his home post Katrina. I have Straight From the Water wrist bands I bought with his cd. He has it going on.

Enjoy, and have a funky day, in a good way.
