SG15-HS3 - Hammer's Slammers infantry on skimmers

 My mounted Slammers have been painted in the same colour scheme as the dismounted infantry, as described in my earlier posts.

You get 4 identical skimmers in this pack.  If you wanted to add a buzzbomb launcher it wouldn't be too hard to fabricate one from a bit of brass rod/tube or even a plastic sprue offcut.

I've painted their skimmers Humbrol 86 Olive Drab the same as their body armour, with a Valejo sepia ink wash.  Details are picked out in Vallejo stonewall grey with a black wash.  The GEV skirt is Vallejo matt black with a Humbrol 32 dark grey drybrush.

I've already got some which act as fast scouts for my NAC troops, though I've treated them as grav vehicles rather than GEVs.

They're also ripe for conversion by adding bits of brass rod, plasticard fins and head-swaps.

SG15-HS2 Hammer's Slammers with visors closed

 I thought I'd posted these pictures a while ago but if I did I couldn't find them!

These Slammers are identical to set SG15-HS1 except that their visors are closed.  Colour scheme is exactly as the first set I painted.

As before, weapons are (L-R, top - bottom) pistol, buzzbomb launcher, powergun, grenade launcher (thanks to Comstar for pointing that out last time) and 4 more powerguns.

 I think they'd make good security personnel too, they look quite intimidating.

One thing I haven't painted on is the red and blue pull tabs on the front of the armour for the painkiller/stimulant injectors, though they are moulded on.

Hammer's Slammers

I've been a fan of David Drake's "Hammer's Slammers" books since I first managed to find a copy of the original 1979 short story collection in my local second hand bookshop.  I was inspired to read it by the notes in the back of Ground Zero Games' 1st edition Dirtside for 6mm warfare.  It therefore seems appropriate that I now post a few pictures of my GZG Slammers figures (click for larger images).

SH15-HS1 contains 8 slammers in 6 poses, helmet visors up.

All are wearing brown fatigues with clamshell armour over the top.  Most have 2cm powerguns apart from the squad leader who has a pistol, and the kneeling trooper with a buzzbomb launcher.

Brown fatigues are Vallejo Beastly brown, armour/helmets are Humbrol 86 olive drab and they've received a wash of Vallejo sepia ink for shading.  I wasn't sure what colour to paint the armour, I couldn't find any reference to colour of anything except the fatigues in the books.  I went with the green to provide a bit of contrast, something useful at this sort of scale.

The shoulder badges are the Slammers' emblem, a yellow shield with a rampant lion in red.  These were a bit fiddly to paint!  To fully appreciate them you'll need to click on the image to see the large version...

I've tried to mix in some different skin colours, using combinations of Vallejo Charred brown, Vallejo Beastly brown and Vallejo sepia or black washes.  I'm quite pleased how they've come out.

GZG Fast Recon

My NAC Marines obviously need some sort of reconnaisance elements. I have a light gunsled, but I fancied something else for a little variety.


When I spotted the Slammers infantry on skimmers (SG15-HS3) in the GZG catalogue, I decided to add a pack to my order to see what they were like. They're great! You get 4 one-piece castings of skimmer & rider. All 4 are the same pose, but it would be pretty easy to do a headswap or two if desired. I've painted mine to match my NAC Marines. Although they aren't quite the same as the NAC troops, I can just use the excuse that these little chaps have lighweight recon armour and cut-down carbines instead of the standard-issue combat gear. When they're painted, you don't really notice the difference much anyway.

I've already got another pack ready to paint, and I may add a squad of dismounted slammers infantry to my next order too.
