Old School Fridays: My Theme Song

Once again I have to apologize for not doing these on a regular basis. Last time I thought I was back to a normal Friday posting but it didn't quite make it. I really like this meme and always plan to do it but something seems to come along to derail that plan. Well, I'm back this week and we'll see how next week goes.

This week's subject is "My Theme Song." I think if anything I can be very hard headed when I believe I'm right and will stand my ground no matter what. So I present Tom Petty singing "I Won't Back Down."

Old School Fridays: Keep It In The Family

This week's theme is musical families. I went with the Cash/Carter Family. June Carter comes from the first family of country music and here she sings with her family Johnny Cash and her daughters, one who goes on to some fame as a country singer herself, Carlene Carter.

Old School Fridays: My Current Mood Is...

I can't believe how many Old School Fridays I've missed recently. I love doing these, but somehow I have missed more than my share lately and technically I've missed Friday, as I'm posting about thirty minutes into Saturday. The theme for this week is our current mood. Well after being sick for the last few weeks and in the hospital and even afterwards tired and rundown I have to say now...I Feel Good.

Old School Fridays: Bloggers Choice

Someone has to remind me when it's Friday! I can't believe I missed Friday. Well, no way am I missing this week's Old School Friday...I'll just pretend it's Friday here down in New Orleans. This weeks choice is Blogger's choice and boy I could spend hours trying to think of what I want to pick, but I'm going with the first song that popped in my head. "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King. I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I love it!

Old School Fridays: If I Were A Boy

This one made me think. I decided to pick a video that made me think of a time when I was a boy, years past. My thinking is now I'm a man, but if I were a boy. I don't know if that makes sense or not. This song is by a local artist that sings about New Orleans and life in the city past and present, Benny Grunch and the Bunch. Most of his songs are done more in a comedic mode, but this one is not.

Old School Fridays: Child Singers

The last two weeks have been so busy with work and other stuff that I forgot to post last Friday. But I'm not forgetting again. This week is Child Singers and my choice is Janis Ian. This video is from the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and she was 16 when she performed. Janis was a singer that sang of subjects that those older than she was rarely touched.

Missed Old School Fridays

Somehow I forgot it was Friday yesterday and didn't post an Old School Fridays. The theme for this week was 10th grade. I hate to admit it but when I was in tenth grade it was 1975. If I had made a post it would have been this. Patti Smith released her album Horses in 1975. Now I wish I could say I was such a hip 10th grader that I was into Patti Smith, but I wasn't. I was bout as square and unaware of music like this as someone could be. It was only later that I discovered Patti Smith. Here is Patti Smith:

Old School Fridays: Songs by New Edition or New Editions Mermbers

I have a confession to make. I was never a fan of New Edition. I can't say that I disliked them. They were one of those groups that really never registered on my radar for some reason. I knew of them, but really can't say I was that familiar with their music. So I've done a little research and I present "Earth Angel" by New Edition. This was a remake of the classic doo-wop song by the Penguins. It was originally done for the sound track to the movie Karate Kid II. I'm a fan of the original of this song and I like the remake.

Old School Fridays: Remakes (Originals vs. Remakes)

This is a cool theme. I love cover versions. I love listening to an artist's take on a song that I already like. First up is Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark." I have to admit that as much as I like the album Born In The USA this song wore out its welcome with me. I remember watching that video with Courtney Cox about a million times. You couldn't escape it if you turned on MTV, they were playing it all the time. And it was Bruce's first really big hit single so the radio was all over it. And it wasn't even my favorite song from the album, not by a long shot. Now years later I can listen to it and enjoy it, but it took awhile. I think it works better live.

Now the cover version. Tegan and Sara are a sister act from Canada that I would not have expected to cover this song. But they do a nice job just with their guitar in the radio station.

Next up is Nine Inch Nails' song "Hurt."

''

The cover version is one of those covers where you identify the song more with the person covering it than the original and this is no knock against Trent, but Johnny Cash owns this song.

Old School Fridays: TV Theme Songs

I was never that big a fan of this show, it was one of those stupid dad/smart kids shows that seem to be everywhere. But the theme song is sung by one of my favorites, Will Hoge. The show was Still Standing. This is the full song, not just what you hear on the tv show.

Old School Fridays: The Year That Was...

A song from the year I graduated high school. The year was 1977 and the band is the Ramones.

Old School Fridays: I Can Drink to that...

Ok, since I don't drink this one gave me pause, but I've picked a song, not so much as regards a party atmosphere but in keeping with the title of the theme. Mary Gauthier singing "I Drink."

Old School Fridays: Christmas Songs

At first I was going to try and find some obscure Christmas song done by someone you wouldn't think of doing a Christmas song, but than I realized how much I love this version done by Bruce Springsteen and decided that it was the song to post. This is an early clip, I'm not sure of the year, but it's from an early Bruce. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Old School Fridays: Favorite Band

There's lot of bands I could put here, from U2 to Wilco, but if I'm being truthful about MY Favorite Band I have to go with the old stand by of the Beatles. No matter how much I like other bands I can't forget they were my first love and I still think the bar others strive to meet.

This is from perhaps their final concert ever.

And one of their first hits.

Old School Fridays: Actors Who Sing

Today's topic is actors who sing. My first thought was Frank Sintra but than I realized that he was a singer who acted. There are a lot of actors who want to be singers, but that doesn't mean they are very good. It seems that actors want to sing, and singers want to act. I thought about this one and tried to figure out who to use and in the end went with Fred Astaire. He's not the best singer, but he's an all around entertainer. As well as seeing him sing you get to watch him dance. When I was younger I used to love to watch his old movies.

Old School Fridays: A Tribute To Jazz

Jazz is one of those musical genres that I'm not that familiar with. Two of the greats though was Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong and there's actually a video of them together and what's even greater, they're singing "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans." What else could I go with?

Old School Fridays: Song From The Year of Your Birth

Ok, I know it's Saturday. I'm a day late. This has been a long week and somewhere I forgot what day it was. I missed posting last week so I'm not going to miss this week too.

I wasn't expecting to find a lot to chose from since my birth year wasn't a big year for rock and roll. But when I saw Ray Charles had released "What d'I Say" I didn't need to look any farther.

I decided to add more since I was really surprised that there were such good choices. I've included Ricky Nelson singing "It's Late." This video is actually from 1959. Ricky Nelson is one of those rockers that really doesn't get justice for his place in music. He was a lot more than just another pretty face.

And finally one of my favorite musicians of all time...Buddy Holly singing his sequel to Peggy Sue.

Old School Fridays: Fight Songs For My Candidate

This week's pick is a fight song for our candidate of choice. I support Barrack Obama for President. We have to keep our eyes on the prize and never forget what it took to get where we are now. I'm ashamed to think of how we as a country used to treat someone just because of the color of their skin. But I'm proud to think that as a country we are about to elect the first African-American as President.

Old School Fridays: One Hit Wonders

There's a lot of one hit wonders to chose from. I recently just put this one on my Ipod so I thought I'd use it. "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow. The group was created by Malcolm McLaren when he got the members of Adam Ant's group to quit and create a new one with 15 year old lead singer Annabella Lwin. The group released three albums and had a few almost hits, but this is really the only song they're remembered for.
