Artline Monday - Poppy rocks

Last November I painted a couple of rocks with poppies on them for Remembrance Sunday so this year I thought it would be nice to make a whole batch of them to hide for people to find.

I started off by giving each rock a base coat of white paint using an Artline poster marker so my designs would stand out and look more vibrant than if I had been drawing on top of the natural grey stone colour.

Rocks with their base coat

Once the white coat was dry I started to draw and paint on the rocks using more poster markers and a selection of Artline 853 OHP markers.  I also used a purple Supreme highlighter on one of my rocks and a red calligraphy pen on a couple too.

Drawing a poppy

On the smaller stones I kept the designs simple, drawing one poppy on each with the OHP pens.

Two more small rocks & the pens used

My husband suggested I make one of the poppies purple to remember all the animals who were killed during war so I coloured one of the flowers in with the purple Supreme highlighter.  I wrote on it "Remembering the animals of war" so people would know what it was for if they found it and weren't familiar with the purple poppy's meaning.

On the larger rocks I had more room to play with so I could get creative!

Painting a poppy

I started this one by painting a poppy...

With the silhouette

... and then drew a silhouette of a solider and dog so that the solider's head would make up the centre of the poppy.

Adding the dates

The last thing I did was to write the word "Remember" and the dates.

Finished design & the pens used

On the next rock I used the red poster marker to make a series of splodges and then...

Red splodges for poppies

... drew in the stems, leaves, flower buds and centres using the Artline 853 OHP markers.

For my Valentines day rocks I used a calligraphy pen to write on the stones so I thought I'd give that another go on a couple of the poppy rocks.

Calligraphy pen rock - Remember them

I also drew two poppies on the first stone and a boarder of poppies on the second one.

Another calligraphy pen rock - Lest we forget...

I painted a couple of drooping poppies on this rock, again using the red poster marker and then used the OHP pens for the stems and middle of one of the flowers.

Drooping poppies & quote rock

I saw this design on Pinterest and wanted to give it a go.  It is a battlefield cross for a fallen solider which is made up of a pair of boots, a gun and helmet.

Battlefield cross & poppies

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae is a poem that really stuck with me when I learnt about it in school so I wrote the first stanza on one of my rocks.  It isn't as neat as I would have liked it to be but sometimes writing on a stone surface is a little difficult with the bumps and holes.

In Flanders fields poem

My eldest daughter was watching me paint these rocks and she wanted to make one too so she selected a stone and drew her own design.  I love her poppy in the middle!

My daughter's poppy rock

Once all of the rocks were finished I used a black OHP marker to write my #ArtlineRocks message on the back of them.  It tells the person who finds it that they can either keep or rehind the stone and asks them to share a photo of it online with the Artline rocks hashtag.

The messages on the back of each rock

Here is our finished collection of rocks!  A couple of them will be travelling somewhere up north and a few will be heading down south too, the rest will be hidden around Birmingham over the next few days...

The finished set

... in fact we're already started hiding some!

Starting to hide the rocks

I hope these rocks are all found at least once before Sunday and I would love to see them popping up online too so I can see where they end up!

If you want to read more of my rock painting posts you can find them here.

Artline Monday - National Parks Week

Yesterday saw the start of National Parks Week, if you haven't heard about it then it is a week of fun and events taking place at the National Parks we have here in the UK and it has inspired my latest collection of #ArtlineRocks!

Rocks and Artline pens

I know that not everyone is lucky enough to live near one of our amazing National Parks so if you can't get to one to join in with the celebrations then you could go and spend some time outside in either a local park, forest or wood and enjoy getting in touch with nature.  With this in mind my rocks are based around things you can do in the park or any wide open space.

Adding a base coat

Because the rocks I am using are quite dark I started off by giving them a coat of paint with my Artline poster markers and then put them to one side while they dried.

Working on the rocks

On my first rock I drew a picnic scene because picnics are one of our favourite things to do together as a family.  I don't know why sitting on a blanket outside to eat a meal makes it more fun but it just does!

Enjoy a picnic at the park

I used poster markers, Artline 853 OHP markers and a yellow paint marker to draw a sandwich, strawberries and a cupcake on a picnic blanket and the green base coat looks like grass.

Painting a red base coat

The second thing we like to do in big parks is to explore nature.  We go on nature walks and see what animals and insects, plants and flowers we can find.  I usually take a notebook or two and my Artline pens and we record and sketch our findings on our adventure.  If you head outside this week maybe you could do the same?

I had a large flat rock that just screamed ladybird to me so I used a red poster marker to give it a base coat and then added the insects features with a black Artline 325T water colour marker and a white poster marker for the eyes.

Explore nature

When the weather has been a little more forgiving than it has been recently there are usually lots of lovely flowers dotted around the parks.  My girls and I love to walk around them and enjoy the colours, shapes and scents so for my third rock I painted a daisy using my poster markers again and the Artline 853 OHP pens and a paint marker.

Look at all the pretty flowers

Parks and open spaces are great for playing games!  Football, tennis, rounders and cricket are lots of fun with friends so I drew a ball on my fourth rock!

Play a game with friends

My last rock was inspired by Marry Poppins, let's go fly a kite!  Now I'll be honest, I've never successfully managed to get a kite in the air whenever I have tried but it's quite funny watching my children run up and down with string trailing after them trying to launch one!  And who knows, maybe one day we'll get one flying!

Let's go fly a kite

These rocks have just been varnished and are sat on the side drying so they will be ready for us to hide in the next day or two.  I'm planning on taking them to a couple of parks around Birmingham this week so keep your eye out if you are in the area!

My park collection of #ArtlineRocks

Can you see who has invaded my picnic rock?  It's a little ant looking for a treat!

I do hope you get to spend some time enjoying the outdoors this week, especially as the weather is so nice at the moment!

Artline Monday - Summer rocks with Artline

Is it raining where you are?  I feel like we've had nothing but rain for weeks and we have been stuck inside, dreaming of summer!  As it was half term and my girls were home with me we decided to make some summer themed #ArtlineRocks to distract us from the weather and for us to hide at the beach when next go.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for....

One rainy afternoon last week we divided up the rocks I had left over from our previous rock painting adventures and I got out our Artline pens.  We find these ones work the best on stones:

Because our rocks are white they didn't need a base coat, if you have darker coloured rocks and stones then it is easier to give them a coat of paint before you start so you have a lighter surface to work on.

Painting the sea with a poster marker

My youngest decided to paint the sea on her first rock and a lovely bright yellow sun.  When it was dry she added some details using the Artline 853 OHP pens and a white paint marker for the waves.

The sun and sea, how I miss them both!

I had a bit of an odd shaped rock to work with so I turned it into a ice cream cone.

Drawing the cone

I drew the outline with a black 853 OHP marker and then coloured it in with yellow and white paint markers.

I used these pens for my ice cream rock

When the paint had dried I added raspberry sauce with my pink Artline Supreme marker and the waffle pattern to the cone with an orange 853 OHP pen.

Kick your flip flops off!

My eldest daughter drew a pair of flip flops on her first rock and wrote a fun message on it!

Strawberry and blueberry ice cream

My youngest thought my vanilla ice cream was boring so she drew her own with strawberry and blueberry scoops instead!

I love ice lollies

She also made this I love ice lollies rock, it's a little abstract looking but she really enjoyed drawing it!

Can you dig it?

Our last rock has a bucket and spade on it, my eldest girl painted the sand with a yellow paint marker and then drew the rest with the 853 OHP pens.

Written on the back of each rock

On the back of each rock we have written #ArtlineRocks, share online, keep or rehide so anybody who finds one will know what to do with it.

Our full set of summer rocks

Here is the full set of our summer themed rocks!  I am going to varnish them this week and then put them away until our planned trip to the beach.

Tips for hiding rocks at the seaside

If you are going to make your own rocks and are thinking about hiding them at the seaside here are a few tips for you....

Do not hide your rocks on the sand.  If the sea comes in too far then your little work of art will be wash away and may never be seen again!

You could hide them on the wall along the beach if the weather is good and the sea is calm.

Hiding rocks on rocks!

If there are rocky walkways or piles of rocks near the beach but not the water then these are great places to hide your stones if you want them found quickly.  The brightly painted rocks standout beautifully against the natural stone!  If you want to make finding your rocks a little trickier then try hiding them up higher instead of low to the ground.

Standing out against the rocks

Some other good places you can hide your rocks are parks, cliff tops, benches and the ornamental gardens and flowerbeds that are usually spotted around beaches and seaside resorts.  I like to hide stones among the flowers and as long as you have varnished them they will still look great when someone finally spots them nestled in there.

Please let me know if you decide to make some of your own #ArtlineRocks, I would love to see them!

Artline Monday - National Stationery Week rocks

Today marks the start of my favourite week of the year, yes it's National Stationery Week!  I wanted to do something special to commemorate it so I decided to create a set of #ArtlineRocks based around the themes for the week.

Let's celebrate stationery!

I have included the products I used in the photographs of each rock if you want to have a go at making your own and the pens and markers can all be found here.  The Artline 853 OHP markers work really well on rocks so they are the ones I use the most often.  If you are new to rock painting and haven't read my previous posts about it you can find them all here.  Okay, now let's get started!

Monday - #makeanote

Today is make a note day so I drew a notebook and pen on this rock with a couple of OHP markers and my metallic silver pen.  Will you join in and use your favourite notebook and pen today?

Monday - #makeanote

Tuesday - #penandpencil

For pen and pencil day I made two separate rocks, the first is a black and yellow pencil (just like the ones we used in school!) and for the second I drew a pen.  Of course it just had to be an Artline pen, it's one of their fab fineliners to be exact!  I didn't have a yellow OHP marker for the pencil so I used one of my Stix drawing pens instead and it turned out quite well.

Tuesday - #penandpencil

Wednesday - #stationerytheworldover

Wednesday is my favourite day of the week, it is World Stationery Day!  The tag for it is #stationerytheworldover so I drew a small picture of the Earth and surrounded it with lots of stationery products.  Again I used the OHP markers, a Stix drawing pen and then a couple of metallic Supreme permanent markers for the paper clips and drawing pin.

Wednesday - #stationerytheworldover

Thursday - #workhappy

Work happy day is all about creating a nice environment for you to work in.  If you have a desk you could add some colour or fun to it with some new stationery or a cheerful mug to use for your brew.  I drew a National Stationery Week mug on my rock and some paperwork because I can face anything if I have a cup of tea first!  How do you work happy?

Thursday - #workhappy

Friday - #aplaceforeverything

Friday is a place for everything day and it is about filing things away and getting organised.  I drew a tidy desk on this rock with folders, a pen holder, a notebook and a pad of post it notes.  Again I used the OHP and Supreme markers for this and a yellow Stix pen.  Will you be tidying and arranging your work space for Friday?

Friday - #aplaceforeverything

Saturday - #getcrafty

Get crafty day is so much fun!  As you might be able to tell from this blog, I love doing a bit of arts and crafts so I drew some "crafty" supplies on this rock.

Saturday - #getcrafty

Sunday - #signaturesunday

Signature Sunday is all about your favourite pen so I used one of my calligraphy pens to to write the tag on this rock.  I also drew a pen using the OHPSupreme and 900XF metallic markers and a trail of ink as if someone was testing how it writes.

Sunday - #signaturesunday

So here is my complete collection of National Stationery Week Artline rocks, aren't they fun?  I hope they are found and enjoyed by some fellow stationery addicts!
