The Tour Jeanne d'Arc - Rouen ... June 2011

The Tour Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc Tower) is the last trace of a castle which was demolished at the end of the 16th century. Built at the beginning of the 13th century by Philippe Auguste, it was in this dungeon-tower in Rouen that Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) was imprisoned and threatened with torture in 1430. Her trial had been committed to the castle.

Sorry I have not really written much , but I am sure the pictures speak volumes!!

Sweet Treats of Rouen .......

We have Sweet/Chocolate shops in England

BUT

they never look as good as those in France ...

Above right (the one with the apple on top of the box) is
Le cadran du Gros Horloge
or the Gros Horloge chocolate clockface  ....

The Gros Horloge is Rouen’s signature monument and these chocolates do it justice –
inside the rich outer casing of chocolate is a melt in the mouth apple and calvados.

Les larmes de Jeanne d’Arc
Honoring one of the most iconic characters in the history of Rouen,
Tears of Joan of Arc are the best-selling specialties of the city.
Its oval shape gave its name to the toasted almond, caramel and
enrobed in dark chocolate.
Its cocoa ganache cover will delight all gourmands!

Just look at these tools and the Formula 1 Car ....

Had to put this in :-)

Rue du Gros Horloge – Rouen

This 420 metre long street is famously known for the astronomical clock (the “Gros Horloge”).

The pride of the people , it is  laid on a Renaissance arch which has spanned the historic street since 1527. The clock lies roughly equal distances  between the Place du Vieux Marché and the cathedral.
The Gros Horloge itself dates back to the 16th century and its movement from 1389.

The  next three photo are taken
under the arch that the clock is laid on ..

The above are busts of famous explorers, these are on either side of the bridge
along the footpaths.
Rouen is on the Seine, about 100 kms north west of Paris. It is the main city of Haute Normandie (Upper Normandy) and of Seine-Maritime. The site has been around for hundreds of years, and was, for a very long time, the second city of France. It is also the  last point on the Seine that can be bridged, which made it an important city for shipping and commerce.
