NABBO Tea Cup 2015!

The year of the Wizard!

As some of you - followers of the ways of NABBO Tea Cup - might already have read in the past, in order to give each NTC tournament a different feel from league games and an extra layer of fun, the organization of the tournament usually adds some house rule to the otherwise fairly regular team tournament builds.
This year the 'little extra house rule' was a free wizard for each team, which instead of the usual Zaping or Fireballing of the opposing players, could make use of proper spell books and attempt to transform the opposing players into frogs! How could it be any funnier than that?

The rules for all these wizards and spells where quite simple, starting with an 2D6 of 8+ as an "activation roll" for the wizard (fluff wise aka "let's check if the wizard is paying any attention to the game..."), and if that went ok, the coach had another d6 roll of 4+ to actually turn an opposing player into a frog or alternatively reverse one of his "frog-players" to the regular "player" (the "frog" was randomly chosen amongst the players on the pitch).
If the coach was lucky enough to roll a "6" on this last roll, he was allowed to repeat this roll and try to transform a second opposing player into a frog.
This could go as far as three players maximum (which was as much "frog-players" as each team could have on the pitch at the same time).

The frog
The "frog-player" was treatd like any other player, with this profile: MA 5, ST 2, AG 4, AV 6. Skills: No Hands, Dodge, Side Step and Right Stuff. Also, the armour was considered magical so any injury roll of 8+ would KO the player instead of any other nastiness.

(For more information on the house rules please have a look at NABBO Tea Cup V in the NABBO League blog).

The tournament

Despite the low number of participants (only six this time), the event was still a lot of fun and for the first time we had the grand total of two ladies playing - more than 33% of our tournament crew, which is a lot more than many big tournaments out there can brag about!
(Yes, just having a bit of fun with maths...)

As far as team choices go, we had Amazons (x2), Chaos Dwarf, Lizardmen, Slann and Vampire, and a combined total of 49 "frogged" players, over the course of nine games.

The Prizes
To commemorate for the fifth NTC, instead of the usual three awards - Champion, Most Casualties and Wooden Spoon, the organization had decided to go for five, adding the Most TD's and Best Defence (least TD's suffered).
Since we "share the wealth" by not giving more than one award to any coach, this meant that this year almost everyone coach took an award home (which is fine since our objective is to have a good time while playing Bloodbowl).

This year I've played Chaos Dwarf and was lucky enough to win the Champion award (started with a lucky last turn 1-1 tie against Amazons which kept me in the race for the upper places, won 2-0 my second game against Lizard - the team that won the Most Casualties; and won 3-0 my last game against a Slann - which was undefeated that far, and ended up winning the Most TD's).
The Most Casualties award was won by Iuliia, one of the ladies playing in the tournament (a rookie player both on our league and on the tourney scene).
The Wooden Spoon was conquered by Marco Preto - his second WS in a row (last year won it Humans and this time with Amazons), which is quite amazing since is one of the best players in our league, so we can only speculate why on earth Nuffle keeps poking him on our tournaments...

Last but not least...
Here's a pic of the custom dugout and dice we've made for the tourney, so if you like them and feel like supporting us, we might still have a few of those extra.

Have fun!

NABBO Tea Cup 2014 - The Report!

As previously announced on the blog, this past Sunday NABBO Tea Cup tournament has managed to get most of it's league crew together, for yet another super day, with abusive loads of BB chitchat, miniature showcase and dice rolling cursing.
As usual, a great fun time, and a wonderful opportunity to mingle with NABBO League old timers, that real life tends to keep away from each other.

This forth edition of the tournament had yet another amazing milestone to point out, our BB league 15th anniversary! (You know our motto: "Failing Go-For-It's since 1999", well, just do the math...)

For that very special reason, the tournament organization decided that this year's custom dice had to be somehow special, so what better way to represent that than make them "golden"?
Kudos to Chessex for them, as they are plain lovely, and the engraving is fantastic - as usual.

The only downside this year, was that we had a couple of friends that had previous commitments, therefore couldn't attend to the tournament, and since we're such a small league, any missing coach is heavily noticed. Apart from that, it was a bright and sunny Sunday and a great gaming environment, and that's what matter the most.

The games
This year, most "fineness" races forgot - or cowered - to show up. Since we had a tournament thematic house rule that would make two big stones move, randomly, in the pitch during the match, that would auto-blitz anyone in their path, that may have scared the pointy ears away.
(You can spot those "drifting stones" in the pics below: they're big, sand-yellow, and moved everywhere on the pitch. Beware!)

Being quite busy with the initial logistics of the tournament, I completely forgot to have pics taken from the first round of the tournament, so, the following images are from the the second and third rounds respectively...

Ulric Uber Alles (a Human team with Norse ancestry) vs Mandelbrot Marauders (Chaos Pact)
A close game that ended with a 2-1 TD win for the MM (1-1 Cas). Coming from a tie, but benefiting from not-so-good game results of his direct contenders, this win gave the MM's just enough points to have a shot at the title in it's last game.

Playing in a Swiss system tournament (winners facing each other) the tough Ostrok Iceclaws (Norse) faced another first round winners, the Kraka Drak Dozers (Dwarf). An rampaging start from the OI, granted them the opening TD around turn 4, after an amazing pass (the norse thrower marked by two dwarfs), to a catch skilled runner (also marked by two opponents), that managed to dodge out and score in the same play. Unfortunately for the norse, the 4 final turns of the drive saw the dwarves KOd and Injure a handful of the Iceclaws, and equalising before the end of the half.
With three players missing in the pitch, and an Icetroll that refused to cooperate every other turn, the OI where unable to hold the Dozers for their 2nd half advance, and ended up loosing the game by 2-1 TD (Cas 3-0).

Black Ferns (Amazon) game vs. The Troopers (Human)
After a 1-1 draw in their first game, the zons entered the pitch with the right attitude, managing to score first, and then, even after the Troopers tied the game, the BF did score again.
But as the turns went by, so did some of the Black Ferns (to the Injured box), and being really outnumbered in the final turns had costed them another tie (2-2) Cas (0-2).

In the last round of the day, and playing for the Wooden Spoon (or away from it), the Ulric Uber Alles (Human), faced another human team, The Troopers. Plenty of loose balls, and back&forward playsended up with a win for the UUA by 3-1TD (0-2 Cas).
Rumours say that Nuffle kept a very watchful eye on The Troopers team during the whole event, making sure the Wooden Spoon wouldn't go anywhere else: bad dice rolls were a constant since round one (with the team finishing the game with only one player on the pitch), right until the last round (when every single dodge or pass attempt would result in a complete fail).

The tournament was won by the Kraka Drak Dozers (Dwarf), which in their last match faced the Mandelbrot Marauders (Chaos Pact), both aiming to win the Most Casualties trophy right from the start.
Despite the astonishing feat of achieving 12 Cas during the three tournament games (an absolute record for all NTC tournaments), the KDD dwarfs where denied their trophy because in the complex process of maiming their opponents, they ended up winning all their games thus winning the tournament!
Faithful to the "Spread the Wealth" tournament rule, the organization allotted the Most Casualties trophy to the second best at mangling opponents: the Mandelbrot Marauders!

A shout out to Fred from the Ligue des Quatre Nation (SBG in the TFF forum), for sponsoring a "Second Best of the NTC " prize (tournament 2nd highest place), with one of the lovely coins they've custom made for their 2014 tournament. The well deserving winners were the Black Ferns (Amazons).
Just to finish up, here's a pic of the tournament SWAG (thematic dugout and custom dice).
We may still have a couple dugouts, and a few more dice to part with, so if you're interested, please drop me a PM on TFF forum.

Have fun!

NABBO Tea Cup 2014 is at bay...

The countdown clock is already ticking for this year's NABBO Tea Cup, the fourth edition of the tourney...

Scheduled for next Sunday, the NABBO League crew tournament still is a good few hours away, and already both teams and coaches are psyching themselves for the most enjoyable (yet very disputed) competition of the season.

This years tournament is taking place in the scorching hot lands of the glorious city-state of Kheente-Khefartha (a fictional Khemri city name with a Portuguese pun to mean something like "as hot as is gets"). Despite all the apparent nonsense of having a sports competition in such an "unfriendly" environment, an well orchestrated press conference gracefully informed all journalists and sports fans that this was a small sacrifice to a greater good: to encourage and develop the beautiful game of Bloodbowl, in the rich, endlessly rich lands of Kheente-Khefartha.
(Any similarities with this fictional theme, and real life sports, is a pure coincidence... perhaps.)

And while you wait for the report of the event, how about to have a peek of the previous editions of the NTC?
You can check them right here, just click on the link: NTC '11, NTC '12, and NTC '13.

Have fun!

Dungeonbowl XI (2014) photo report

One of the Major (and coolest) Blood Bowl Tournaments out there has got to be the Dungeonbowl! It's held in Germany, and it went on in the past 15th and 16th of March.

You can check the rules used this year in this TFF thread, or go directly to this picture section, kindly provided by TFF fellow gamer traveller to see all the lovely teams and pitches they had there this year.

And since you're there, take your time and have a look at all other great Blood Bowl info and goodies in traveller Blood Bowl Miniatures site.

And just for a fun fact, take a look at the dugouts they used this year in "The Dungeon" - the stage where the Dungeonbowl winner will be decided (pic below)!

Wondering where you've seen those before? ;-)

It's really cool to see our stuff being used out there.
Thanks for that guys!

NABBO Tea Cup 2013

Another year, another tourney...

Last weekend NABBO League crew gathered for their (so far) yearly tournament.
It's the third year in a row, and so far it has been a whole lot of fun!
As I mentioned in a post about it's first edition (here), while the core of the crew that attends to the tourney are the Blood Bowl League "regulars", every year we manage to have some old league mates to join us in the fun, and what a fantastic opportunity that is to remember old stories of legendary games and teams...

This year's tournament fluff was based on the global climate changes, and to reflect that into Blood Bowl game terms this would mean that despite whatever "Weather Table" result you'd roll during the match, in the beginning of each half, one (out of two) random weather phenomenon would take place and stay in for the rest of that same half.

This weather phenomenon were represented by a template (that stayed on the table), and it had a 'Zone of influence' of a square (center) plus three squares in every direction. The modifiers described below would apply if the action attempted was inside this 'Zone of Influence'.

The two different phenomenons were "Tornado warning!", and "Everything Frozen??".
The first one meant that all Pass, Catch, and Intercept actions were influenced by -1 modifier, and every time a ball was dropped or touched the pitch (for whatever reason), it would bounce one extra square directly away from the center of the Tornado template.
The second phenomenon, would influence the Go-For-It's, and Dodging attempts (by the same -1 modifier) as if the ground was completely frozen, inducing players to slip.

As in past events we had a thematic custom pitch and dice (pic above), which were a great success especially whenever the dice rolls were 'convenient'.
On all other occasions the dice were just 'pretty'... ;-)

The games

A total of eight different races (Amazon, Human, Elf, Dark Elf, High Elf, Norse, Vampire, and Undead), with almost as much different tactical approaches, granted a good challenge for every coach in the event.

Graveyard Diggers (Undead) vs Yokai Buntai (Dark Elves), one of the games from the first round, and the first tie of the tourney (2-2 TD, 1-1 Cas).

Frost's Frost Fangs (Norse) facing the Innsmouth Oceanics (Elf), in a game that proved to be rougher than what the Norse armour could stand, soon leaving them outnumbered and loosing the match unable to hold off the agile elves (0-3 TD, 1-4 Cas).

Garlic 'n Mirrors United (Vampire) overpowering The Buffs (High Elf), in a day that the odds didn't favoured these particular pointy ears (3-1 TD, 1-0 Cas).

The beautifully painted Pink Buccaneers (Amazons) in a tough match against the cyber-looking Mini Skull Crushers (Human), for a marginal win in the last few turns of the game (3-2 TD, 0-0 Cas).

In the end of the day, the Innsmouth Oceanics (Elf), ended up snatching the tournament "Champion" trophy with three wins, of which the last two where very close games: one against the vampires (2-1 TD, 2-4 Cas), and the last one against the amazons (2-1 TD, 1-2 Cas).
Also congrats to the Garlic 'n Mirrors United vampire team for the "Most violent" trophy!

A blast of a day as usual.
Have fun!

NABBO Tea Cup 2012

As some of you might remember, past 2011 our local Blood Bowl league decided to have a tournament (NABBO Tea Cup) to commemorate its 10th League (link). Truth is everyone had such a great time, that right there on the spot we decided to do another one the following year (that would be early December 2012, to take 'advantage' of a couple of holidays around that time). But then, "real life" decided to meddle with our BB affairs, and things got a bit less easy...

To keep the boring stuff at bay, I’ll just tell that due to ‘out-of-our-control’ delays (such as ‘customs officials’ strike that lasted for a hand full of months…), everything was forced to be postponed, including our custom Chessex D6 that only arrived mid January. Fittingly enough, the tournament fluff was about the announced “End of the World” (for late December 2012), and so with some tweaks here and there it all fell into place.

According to the tournament fluff, Mayan civilization was spot on about a big cataclysm in the end of 2012, which was to engulf the world as we know it.
What they didn’t knew or forgot to tell us was that this was to be triggered by an massive invocation of Cthulhu demi-gods (hurray for the tentacle dudes!), thought out by a obscure cult that would combine the right alignment of the stars, with a pool of thousands of sacrificial souls gathered in one same spot!
And what better place to gather such amount of souls, than a pitch of Blood Bowl and its spectators?

In the ensuing fight between the cultists and the vigilants (the late trying to keep the aberrations at bay), several “space and time” portals were opened by the cultist faction engulfing everyone within a few miles while the battle raged on, only to release them when it was all over. Despite all the confusion in the survivors minds, it’s now a bit easier to understand why a tournament that begun early December 2012 (or at least that’s what it was supposed to…), only ended in... early February of 2013!!!

Aside from the regular 1.1k team choice, plus a pack of skills (6 General, 4 General and 1 doubles, or 2 General and 2 doubles), there was one extra thematic fluff thing each coach had to do. After sitting in his gaming table and looking after his opponent for that match, the coach had to choose which side of the “grand scheme” he would be a part of: either helping with the invocations to turn our world upside down, or fighting it!

- The Cult -
If joining “the cult” and helping with the invocations of Cthulhu, he would then needed to “raffle” amongst his players who would be the true vessel of the gods, and that player would be assigned the skill “Tentacles” for the rest of the game.
The Tentacle player presence in the pitch was mandatory, and if something happened to that player that kept him out of the pitch (ko, or injured), then immediately another player had to be gifted to “serve the gods”, and see the Tentacle transferred to him.

 -The Vigilants -
On the other hand, if the coach had no sympathy for entities from other worlds, and felt like kicking some tentacle’ed butts, he could choose to wield the “Burning Nail”, one glamorously weird magical dagger that could be used to cut cheese, carve wood or even pick teeth, without ever loosing edge. Oh, and it could also be used to Stab opponent players, with +1 on the armour against anyone with Tentacles!

Of course with such different takes on the game, we needed to have two different sets of dice for coaches to pick from, according to the factions they choose (either 'flaming orange', or 'tentacle green').
A thematic dugout was obviously mandatory, therefore with all the fluff in mind, one was created.
It represents a decrepit house (that's where the Reserves stand), a Sub-Cave for the KO’ed (where some of poster signs on the walls show the logos of old NABBO League legendary teams), and a Secret Cave, where evil lurks and the invocations take place (over a scatter template, just to point the way to the aforementioned invocations…), and you can also put Dead & Injured guys in there!

Here's the Dugout and the Dice. Both Poggo Stick and Chainsaw minis are just for scale!

The tournament was pretty much a success, with two more players than the last one, everyone had lots of fun (that kinda was the easy part since we’re all friends and already know each other from the local BB League), and while not a complete surprise, it was quite nice to see it won by the only girl playing in the tournament. A “Two-nil” score against every coach in her path was a sure recipe to victory and one to remain in the history of the competition!

Tournament Pic #1: Up there we have Dark Elves facing Norse (the first 2-0 for the Elves that would keep that same record through the whole competition), and in the lower part of the pic another Norse team faces a Human team (3-1 for the Norse).

Tournament Pic #2: On the white pitch Wood Elves face High Elves (with a 4-2 end result), and in the green turn Humans take a dent at Undead winning by some generous 4-1.

Tournament Pic #3: Later in the competition the Undead strugle to keep another Humans team at bay (up in the pic), while in the bottom of the pic, the High Elves lose 2-1 to the Norse, despite winning the attrition war.

Edit: With the tournament over, and despite still having some math to do, we may still have a few Dugouts and Dice as leftovers to sell (as much as we’d like to keep ‘em all for future League gifts and stuff, money is an issue and so we'll probably have to part with them). I'll probably post those later on Talk Fantasy Football, so if someone is interested let me know either here or by pm in TFF.

Have fun!

NABBO TC dugout meets NAFC 2012

After being spotted in the Challenge of Q'uermitt 2012, this time the NABBO Tea Cup memorabilia  - both dugout and dice - have been seen, this time in the NAF Championship 2012!
Check out those yellow circles in the image...

Apparently, out of 182 coaches playing in the tournament, the first one that sits to play with our friend Neil was using a NABBO TC dugout and taking the NABBO dice along with it!
Note that Neil is himself a (hopefully proud) owner of a complete set of NABBO TC collectibles.

How about that for a coincidence?
:)

Update (29 May):

As promised, after checking our sources, using Neil's tip, and consulting a powerful oracle in distant Albion lands, we decided to use our most advanced device of warp transmission and send a pm to ceetee! He promptly answer and kindly sent us this pic taken in the NAFC with him holding... you know what!

Kudos to Neil and ceetee for immortalizing the moment!

NABBO Tea Cup 2011 - pt. 3 -

(Third and last update on the NABBO Tea Cup 2011 article)

The day of the tournament has come and gone...
Its impressive how fast an entire day runs when you're having a blast! (And that's probably the best way I find to define how the whole tournament went!)
Having said that, and despite all the fun of getting together with some old league friends, all the games were quite competitive and the "award winners" were only decided in the last game round of the day. I was glad to see how, apparently (and much like riding a bike), old timers didn't forget how much fun it is to roll Pow's against your opponent's team, and so they did as much as Nuffle or the rerolls allowed!
Everybody loved the "Tea Cup 2011" official dugouts (which includes a weather and kick-off table presented by Merry Mayhem News!) but the stars of the day were the custom ivory/marble NABBO dice made by Chessex! Thumbs up to Joseph for such amazing work.

Pic 1: Clockwork Green (orc) preparing the kick-off to the Black Ferns (Amazon), only to see them show off their playbook and equalise in the last three turns of the match. That would turn out to be the only TD conceded by the greens in the entire competition, feat that would assure them the top place in tournament!

Pic 2: Here the Rockandrolla Steel Heads (dwarf) stretch out through the entire field, trying to hold off the Deep-Six Diggers (Necromantic). The resilience of the short fellows kept them in the game for a long time but Necro team ended up capitalising on their fast movement, finishing this game with a 2-1 win.

Pic3: The (induced by brew abuse) brawling style of play of the Lanshor Wolves (Norse) fell short against the dodgy game of the Prowling Goddesses (Amazon).
Winning by 2-1 the lady's proved to the horn-helmeted norse that they could pick and stand a fight as good as any half-naked men, theory that proved to be right almost 'till the end, when they faced the half-naked orcs of Clockwork Green loosing by 0-1 in the end of the second half.

Pic 4: Here's the official stuff: our custom NABBO "Failing Go-For-It's Since 1999" dice, and "Tea Cup 2011" dugout! We might have a couple of them left to sell if someone is interested. By the way Zug is only there for scale!

One final word...
Unfortunately, due to some work related problems that required his presence, Abraxis was not able to attend to it as we all wish he did, but we will no doubt have a ton of other chances to welcome him and his newly painted Midgets!

NABBO Tea Cup 2011 - pt. 2 -

(second part of NABBO Tea Cup 2011 article)

Just another few words of a "not-that-short-now" short story.

Back then (1999), fluff was perhaps "the most" important thing and so the almost forgotten background story of the NABBO League stated something like this...
"Once upon a time there was a miserably poor, rural community where most crops kept being lost or destroyed by endless years of invading Chaos or Orc raids, only halted when really, but reeeeally bad weather settled in! Only the toughest, the crippled or the stupid remained in those harsh border lands, fighting to survive each day.

It's not difficult to understand that the once beautifully cultivated fields got left in complete neglect as other far more important issues (such as running or fighting for their life's) arised.
Hunger was almost a constant, and as the years went by, both men and beasts left behind in the aftermath of the invasions, struggled to find something to eat.
And that is when it all comes together: One foggy afternoon, while going back to the settlement empty handed, a team of human scouts short cuted through an open field when one of them spotted a huge turnip just a few meters ahead.
Obviously they went for it, but just as they got hold of the tasty vegetable, they realised they were not alone in the field...

Suddenly the fog seemed to have disappeared and there they were, standing right in the middle of an open field with of a bunch of orc's, apparently as surprised as they were, between them and the safety of their settlement.
After the initial moments of surprise for both sides, they soon realise that neither were war party's, but scouts looking for the very same thing - food -, and as far as both could tell the only thing eatable out there without too much of a trouble was that turnip!

The story goes on and on, stating how both sides slammed into one another, using whatever skills they had, sometimes running and passing the turnip amongst them selves, other times just tackling and blocking, in an attempt to grab or keep hold of the turnip, that annoyingly kept changing sides...
No one really knows for sure in which side's soup that turnip ended, as nowadays both races have slightly different endings for the story, but for what it's worth, similar brawls kept happening in that same field long after any turnip sprouted there, turning it into a festival (food, drinks, and brawls), and later into a real event (brawls, with drinks and food)!

That huge turnip was never forgotten and earned its place in the crest of the organised league that "a simple brawl" had turned into, pictured in gold and soaring high over the stripes that represented the once cultivated fields.
So what about the name of the league?
Oh that, was an homage to that turnip since the very start, as "nabo" is the word for "turnip" in the native language and in that way the acronym N.A.B.B.O would have a double meaning as Neglectic Agricultural Blood Bowl Organization.

(to be continued...)

NABBO Tea Cup 2011

Short story...
As most of us Blood Bowl die hard fans would certainly like to, the fact is that only a chosen lucky few get the chance or opportunity to play in big tournaments.
A few years back, in one of ours BB league night the "Big Tournament" subject came up: the NAF guys were starting to plan the first NAF World Cup!
For a few minutes we all had that grin in our face, day dreaming of how "grand" would be attending to it, but as much as we all would like to, real life stuff such as work, family, economics, or a mix of them all ended up luring our expectations.

This year, to commemorate our very special 10th league (in more than 12 years of existence), we've decided to put together our own tournament, and invite to it all our past and present league players and a few friends too (thumbs up to Abraxis for planning on coming to commemorate and play with us)!

The tournment will be held in a single day (three games, top ranking coaches playing each other each round), the coaches will have 1,100,000 g.c. to spend in players, skills, re-rolls, etc. and in the end of the day three coaches will be awarded: the best coach (highest score), the most violent (more casualtys), and the "wooden spoon" (for the lowest scoring coach in the cup).

As we are a very small league there wont be any big glittering prizes, except for a "thematic" Cup for each of the awarded coaches, however we did produce a custom made Dugout, and a set of dice with our logo and motto for the past 12 years.

(to be continued...)
