Ashley LaMar & Tebow and Wilkins

Who is in the photo at right?

That's me and my two dogs at Fresh 2 Order in Midtown Atlanta. I'm Ashley LaMar, a writer (Technical Writer, Blogger, and Novelist). My sidekicks are Tebow and Wilkins. Tebow is a 6-year-old male chihuahua and Wilkins is a 3-year old male chiweenie (that's a chihuahua/dachshund mix).

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

When we first moved to Atlanta we lived in Midtown and the city sights and noises scared my dogs (we were from a small town) so I took every opportunity to take them out and explore a little bit farther each week to get them comfortable. This photo was taken during our first trip to Fresh 2 Order. They have a dog-friendly patio (most places in Atlanta are pretty dog-friendly) so I grabbed a coffee and a cupcake while we hung out and greeted new people and listened to the sounds of the city.

What's brewing?

I indulged in a vanilla latte although I can't drink coffee super hot so I always have to wait about 15 minutes while it cools down just a little bit. The boys had water.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

But of course! I had a mini caramel cupcake and the boys had peanut butter biscuits. No complaints.

How were you and Tebow and Wilkins united?

My husband had Tebow before I met him so when we were married I just suddenly became a dog owner. After about a year together we thought we should expand the pack so we scoped out different local rescues and that's when we discovered Wilkins. He was 7 weeks old and living in a local doggie foster home recovering from some abuse he'd suffered in a previous location. We brought him home a week after meeting him and he's been a great addition.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

They are named after athletes we admire - Tim Tebow and Dominique Wilkins. They don't really have any nicknames, we like their names as-is.

Do your dogs have a role at your publishing company?

Office cuddlers and stress-relievers! They say that pet owners have less stress and anxiety than non-pet owners so I'll go with that. Both dogs are very affectionate so it's nice to take a break sometimes and just love on them.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Birds mostly. I'm not sure why birds set my dogs off so much but they do. They don't mind cats, squirrels, chipmunks, or any people but if they see a bird they will go completely crazy. Weird little dogs.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Rope and socks. They love to play tug-o'-war more than any other game so anything they can sink their teeth in to and pull is what they want. In fact, Tebow has learned that "toy" means ball, stuffed hedgehog, etc but "rope" is a very specific red and white rope toy.

Do Tebow and Wilkins have a special pet-pal?

Just each other.

What is each dog's best quality?

Tebow is very gentle. Chihuahua's have reputation of being annoying yappy little dogs with semi-aggressive personalities but that's not the case with Tebow. He's a very gentle sweet dog although he does tend to be a loner. Wilkins on the other hand is a love-machine. All he wants is to be on your lap, in your face, receiving constant love and attention.

If your dogs could change one thing about about Georgians, what would it be?

Hmmm, well, Tebow would probably ask that everyone knock it off with the Tim Tebow jokes. They get old after a while. Wilkins would ask that Georgia pass a law that requires that everyone carry dog treats in their pockets at all times and give them to him on sight. He'll do anything for a treat.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Omg...I'd ask Tebow if he prefers to sleep in his crate alone or in a shared crate with Wilkins. I swear, he's never happy. He definitely likes to sleep in his crate but sometimes he cries when he's alone and Wilkins is in his own crate. Other times he's cries if Wilkins is in there with him. I'd tell him to make up his mind already. As for Wilkins, I'd ask him why he will eat apple slices from my hand but not out of his own bowl. It's a weird trait and I hate holding the apple while he eats it.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Tebow and Wilkins could speak, who should voice them?

Tebow would absolutely have to be voiced by Sean Connery! Ever since he was a puppy that's the voice we've given him when we imagine him talking. It's probably an odd pick but that's just what we imagine with him. Wilkins is the tough call but I'd probably pick a kid like Jacob Tremblay. Wilkins is just a hyperactive little child.

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Tebow would tell you to cherish your alone time because it's hard to come by while Wilkins would tell you to never miss the opportunity to tell someone you love them.

Kate Barker & Molly and Duke

Who is in the photo at right?

Hi, I’m Kate Barker. My Sweet Husband and I own Oregon Street Antique Mall in Redding, California. We’ve been married forty-nine years this January. We’ve had three boxers. This gal’s name is Molly…she’s a fabulous guard dog and gentle companion to her little brother and all of our grandchildren. She’s five. The little guy I’m holding is Duke…he’s a Chiweenie (Doxie-Chihuahua mix). He’s the baby…only three years old, very alert, fun-loving and affectionate…and loves playing with Molly.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We’re getting ready for a trip to Portland, Oregon. Takin’ our tea and coffee and our doggies! Oregon is a dog-loving state! They give doggie treats at all the gas stations…and most hotels do not mind if you have your dog with you. (Best to check first though, ‘cause there are some that aren’t able to accommodate dogs.

What's brewing?

My Sweet Husband is a fan of straight-up coffee…no flavors. I love tea…some flavored, but mostly just a robust black tea. In summer, we both devour lots of iced tea.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

We usually make a stop in Central Point, Oregon to pick up some delicious handmade chocolates at LillieBelle Farms Artisan Chocolates.

No chocolates for the puppies, of course! We carry our own goodies for them…but Molly doesn’t like to eat on the road…only after we settle in someplace. Duke eats any where, any time! Once, at an outside restaurant in St. Helens, Oregon, he had his own doggie version of spaghetti and meatballs [photo left].

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Our older boxer’s name was Max…and when we got the boxer puppy, Max and Molly just sounded good together. The Chiweenie was so tiny when we got him, we thought he needed a big name. Oldest Grandchildren thought of Marmaduke, but I was thinking of John Wayne. The puppy must have read our minds, cause he doesn’t know he’s a little dog! He’s got a big personality!

About how many times per year do you hear that you've got a great last name for a dog-lover?

Oh, Lots! And our entire family loves dogs…so it sure fits!!

How were you and your dogs united?

We were looking for a boxer puppy for our older Max to help raise. He was such a calm, quiet dog. Don’t know what happened…. Molly’s not like that at all…but she’s lots of fun. And a great guard dog…. Max cared more about making friends than standing guard.

Our little dog was born to a rescue long-haired Doxie. The gal who rescued her had no idea she was pregnant. Duke was one of those puppies and we offered to take him. We were happy to have a small dog again. He’s a joy…and added lots of laughter to our lives.

Cat, postman, squirrel....?

Molly loves other creatures…she’s curious about most and wants to make friends. But, she’s not keen on people she doesn’t know. Once we give the OK, she’s usually fine, unless they’re wearing a baseball cap or a hoodie. Then we have to work a bit harder to assure her they’re friends! Duke loves all people and most critters, except he’s decided his job is to keep birds out of our yard!

Squeaky-toy, ball, stick...?

Both dogs love to play…catch balls, fetch or chew up squeaky toys or chase one another…sometimes they just entertain one another.

Where is your dogs' favorite outdoor destination?

They are both great travelers and seem happy wherever we go. Probably, they love our ranch the best. Wide open spaces, many different smells and critters and lots of exploring. In the winter, coming inside to lie down near the wood stove is tops!

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

They’re crazy about our daughter and son-in-law’s two Labs, Dozer and Emma and little Gracie. They also love to play with our son and daughter-in-law’s Lab Sandy, German Short-Hair, Mickey, and little Dachshund, Spots.

What is each dog's best quality?

Molly is loyal and loving and fantastic with children of all ages. We always know when a baby has pooped, cause Molly follows him/her around until someone changes the diaper! If a baby is crying, she won’t leave it’s side and whines until someone comes and picks up the baby. Duke is friendly and playful and everybody loves him!

If your dogs could change one thing about Californians, what would it be?

Slow down already! Smell the roses, enjoy the sunshine, have some fun!!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Maybe Katherine Heigl for Molly…kind and loving, but could be ferocious if necessary!

For Duke, of course, John Wayne, but since he’s no longer with us, maybe…Sam Elliott or Hugh Jackman…(as the Drover in the movie Australia).

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Are ya happy?

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Molly:You all should play more-chase me!

Duke: Have some fun-let's explore!

Debra Pasquella & Lola

Who is in the photo at right?

I'm Debra Pasquella, author, columnist & LGBT advocate. My dog's name is Lola. She's 4 years old and she's a Chiweenie (half dachshund, half chihuahua).

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

I brew my own coffee since I work from home and most places do not accept dogs in their establishments. Coffee is for any occasion!

What's brewing?

Starbucks black coffee is brewing.

Any goodies to go with the coffee?

Sometimes an egg on toast or cereal. In the afternoon it's just by itself.

How were you and Lola united?

I rescued her from a shelter. She was one day away from being euthanized.

Any treats for Lola on this occasion?

Yes. She loves her organic sweet potato cookies.

How did Lola get her name? Does she have any nicknames?

When my mother saw Lola's face, she kissed her and said, "Lola!!!" And there you have it! Her nicknames are funny. Sometimes I call her "The Boogs" or "Bubba" and even "Bugaloo". I have no idea.

Tennis ball, stick, squeaky-toy...?

Squeaky toy.

Postman, cat, squirrel...?

Obsessed with the neighbor's cat.

Where is Lola's favorite place for an outing?

The park -- but she hates dog parks. Not very sociable when out and about.

Who is Lola's best pet-pal?

My sisters white lab named, Dakota. She is in love with him!

What is Lola's most endearing quality?

The way she comforts me when I'm not feeling well. She totally knows when her mama isn't feeling OK.

If Lola could change one thing about New Yorkers, what would it be?

"Stop tawkin' so loud!"

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Lola could speak, who should voice her?

Jennifer Tilly.

If Lola could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

"Can you see spirits on the other side?" (Always wanted to know that.)

Lauren Schmidt & Gypsy Marie

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Lauren Schmidt, a fashion and lifestyle blogger and founder of www.GypsyMarie.com, an entrepreneur, author, model and photographer. I live each day doing what I love!

Gypsy Marie, 1.5 years old long- haired chiweenie residing in beautiful Scottsdale, AZ. Gypsy is a socially savvy diva with a big heart and an even bigger personality. When she isn’t flirting and showing off her fluffy tail she is taking naps cuddled up to her favorite furry toy.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Gypsy and I had a coffee date on our way to a local dog park.

Any treats for you or Gypsy Marie on this occasion?

A coffee date always consists of treats for Gypsy and me. We stopped at a Starbucks before making way to the park and Gypsy got her absolute favorite, a puppuccino, and I got a salted Caramel mocha. Tis The Season for delicious treats and walks through the park!

How were you and Gypsy Marie united?

Gypsy & I were united when I made a trip to a local no kill shelter. I wasn’t necessarily looking to adopt right away but sometimes things are just meant to be. I asked an employee if I could play with her outside of the kennel she shared with two other dogs and as soon as I picked her up she went from stiff and scared to relaxed and calm. Holding her was the moment I knew that I needed her and she needed me and the rest was history.

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

My dog got her name from her playful and warm-hearted spirit. She is a lover, a wanderer and has a free spirit.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

She loves everyone and anything except for spiders and crickets. She loves the postman, has a fascination with cats and wishes she could have a squirrel for a BFF.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

All the above! My dog loves toys! She is not picky when it comes her to toys however her inner diva does come out when she has to share with her fellow canine friends.

Where is Gypsy's favorite outdoor destination?

Gypsy's favorite outdoor destination is definitely the beach! She loves to play in the sand and chase after seagulls.

Who is Gypsy's best pet-pal?

Gypsy Marie has two best pals. Urie is a big beautiful male Lab that she loves to visit in California. They love to go on walks together and have play dates! Her other furry friend is an 11-year-old Blue Russian male cat named Miles. You can often find Gypsy and Miles napping and watching TV together.

What is Gypsy's best quality?

Gypsy’s best quality is her unconditional love. I find myself taking her with me when I run errands and go shopping. People love to interact with her whether it’s just to say hi or to pet her; these interactions generate smiles on faces, and it's priceless and also amazing to witness.

If Gypsy could change one thing about Arizonans, what would it be?

Gypsy thinks that there is a crazy amount of awful drivers in Arizona and would like that to change.

If Gypsy could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

I would ask her how I have done as a mom and if I could improve on anything? I would also thank her for rescuing me. The quote that always resonates with me is, “Who rescued who?”

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Gypsy Marie could speak, who should voice her?

I definitely think my dog is naturally sarcastic and has a sense of humor based on her daily dose of comedic acts that she does on the reg. I would definitely say Amy Schumer would be the perfect voice to represent her.

What advice would Gypsy Marie give if asked?

Be true to yourself, do what you love, be kind and empathetic of others and stay fierce and fabulous because you are a star and you were meant to shine!
